Bottle from Nelsons Wines, 11th March 09. Chestnut colouration with a very fruity and malty aroma. The alcohol is nicely hidden and the fruit, malt and hop flavours mix nicely. Good stuff.

Earthy brown hazy pour (lots of floating yeast chunks) with medium cream head, which lasts right to the finish. Sweet, musty aroma, deliciously yeasty and doughy with subtle alcohol kick in the background. A fair bit of candi sugar. Definate alcohol taste, with a very delicate bittersweet finish. Doughy flavour, slight cream and banana notes. Heat from high alcohol present. Rich creamy body with mild carbonation. Lovely combination of flavours and aromas, although the alcohol does become slightly overpowering.

In short: A toasted earthy, woody and nutty Belgian ale with a spicy character that doesn’t fit in. Still pretty decent.
How: Bottle 330ml. Consumed when about 6 months old (almost 2 years before expiration date)
The look: Cloudy light brown body topped by a medium beige head
In long: A gusher. Nose of earthy dirty malts, even has smoky notes. Taste is very toasted but only lightly caramelized. Some nutty notes, the toastiness and a little smoky character all blend together to created a smoked almonds flavour. Some typical Belgian residual candy sugar but overall the beer doesn’t feel very sweet and the woody hops dry it out nicely. That would have been a highly drinkable beer but unfortunately there was that spicy character (don’t know if the beer is actually spiced) that didn’t fit with the rest of the beer. Called “Forbidden Fruit” and this beer is the pretty much the only way for most overweight ugly beer-geeks to brag about having tasted the forbidden fruit.
