COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Dark beer existed in Bavaria long before light beer. This was the first type of beer to be brewed at Hofbräuhaus when it was founded. Today, when beer-lovers all over the world talk about dark beer, they usually mean a Munich style beer. Today, Hofbräu Dunkel - the archetypal Bavarian beer - is still as popular as ever. With its alcoholic content of around 5.5% volume and its spicy taste, it’s a refreshing beer that suits all kinds of occasion. A beer in the traditional Munich style!

Drank from a twelve ounce bottle. Definitely one of my favorite goto beers over the years. Amazing aromas of malts. Nice sweet flavor.

Bottle from The Real Ale Shop Newark. Bizarre I have have not had this before. Clear brown colour and lasting beige head. Some mild brown malt. Eady drinking in the mouth. It’s fine. Rather a light dunkel in terms of flavour but it’s fine. Light malt and easy drinking. Fine.

Bottle. It pours a clear, sparkling dark chestnut body under a creamy, fingerthick off-white head. Nice curtains. There’s a faint touch of cooked vegetables in the aroma, with raisins and prunes, some caramel and a little roasted note. The flavor has a very nice bitterness, keeping the sweetness under control. An easy task actually, as it’s a quite dry beer. Pleasant carbonation level, soft and full-bodied on the palate. Some roasted malts in the back. Lasting roasted, caramel finish with a very fine bitterness. Except for the touch of dms in the aroma, a very fine brew. 140921

Gift. Dark translucent brown copper color with small ring of a head and little lacing. Aroma is sweet and malty with slight fruity vinous notes. Flavor has sweet candy malts up front and a clean, light caramel finish. Simple and refreshing- okay overall

Clear red/brownish with a two finger beige foam that dissipates quickly, leaving some lacinginga. Aroma of roasted malt, dark bread, minerals, crackers. Taste is soft, with malty flavours and some chocolate (without the sweetness), slight flowery in the back, finishes quite dry. Medium body, medium carbo, smooth texture. Very solid.

500 ml bottle. Slow gusher. Dark chestnut colour, perfectly clear, with a huge, fluffy, forever lasting light beige head. Good lacing. Nutty, herbal and toasted nose. Some toffee notes, dark toasted malts, definitely coffee powder, some mild berry fruit presence. Rooty taste, slightly astringent and moderately sweet. No real bitterness to speak of, just a tiny coffee like punch. Caramel and malt in the aftertaste. Pretty easy to drink despite its mid strenght. Soft to average carbonation, medium body, slightly oily texture. Would buy it again for the price. Good.

Flaska från SB. Hofbräu-mixpack. Gillar torrheten. Riktigt lyckad.

24.08.2014, 0,5l bottle @ home:
Nice creamy mediumlasting head. Aroma is slightly sweet, caramel malts, nuts, hay, minerals, "knekk", grass, coffee, chocolate. Taste is slightly dry, nuts, hay, caramel malts, weeds, "knekk", minerals, paper. Medium bitterness, slightly grainy and mineraly mouthfeel. Fair enough.
