Dark beer existed in Bavaria long before light beer. This was the first type of beer to be brewed at Hofbräuhaus when it was founded. Today, when beer-lovers all over the world talk about dark beer, they usually mean a Munich style beer. Today, Hofbräu Dunkel - the archetypal Bavarian beer - is still as popular as ever. With its alcoholic content of around 5.5% volume and its spicy taste, it’s a refreshing beer that suits all kinds of occasion. A beer in the traditional Munich style!

Bottle that poured a translucent dark brown with an off white cream head that dissipated quickly leaving a small amount of lace. The aroma is hay, caramel and bread dough, while the taste is sweet. The flavor is more caramel than anything else. The texture is creamy and leaves a slight coating on the tongue. Overall, it is easy to drink.

500cc bottle and on tap at the brew house. It is a light coloured dunkel. Pretty much a benchmark for the style. Sweet start and finish. Lots of maltyness and caramel. Light roasty notes.

This was poured into a pilsener glass. The appearance was a decent semi-dark brown color with a one finger white to off white foamy head that lingers for a slim minute. Light lacing stuck around the glass. The smell had a slight "smoked" sweet semi-meat like quality. However, I must admit there’s still that slight "skunk" to it. It’s there but probably would be more prevalent within three weeks. The taste copied the smell leaving out the smell leaving out the skunkiness. The meaty to smokey quality comes across. On the palate, this one sat about a light on the body with a pretty good sessionability about it. As a Munich Dunkel, the carbonation seemed appropriately styled as it came across fairly smooth. Overall, I say this was a decent Munich Dunkel. Wishing there would be a date somewhere on the bottle or the company would do away with green bottles.

Bottle at home. Subtly sweet caramel and some fruit notes. Malty and mildly peppery. Medium body. Interesting.

Dark amber color w/ not much head. Smell of hay. Taste is somewhat bland, but smooth.

Tap @ Bock Beer Restaurant, Athens, 04/03/15. Pours a reddish brown with a good, brownish head. Aroma is raisin, bread, some fruitiness. Taste is bready, some raisin, dark malt. Light with high carbonation.

Pours dark with a thin head. Aroma doesn't jump out of the glass; quite timid despite the strong Amber color. Flavor is bold on the palette but easy drinking. Several glasses can be consumed in short order without effort! Not an amazing beer but an easy choice if you want something dark. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Colore rosso scuro/marrone, bella schiuma. Odore di malto, sapore dolce di malto, temperato dall’amaro sul finale, anche se la bilancia dei sapori pende dalla parte del dolce. Una più che onesta rossa a bassa fermentazione.

11.2oz Bottle at home. Pours very clean dark bronze, light offwhite head fades quickly. Very strong grape, sweet red wine scent, bit of dark malt. Taste more red grape, lightly malted, some type of wood. I’m not getting the spice or malt balance that I expected. Bit too sweet to be a good drinking beer for me.

This one is very german malted. Not really my style as the malt and sweetness over powers it.
