COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Dark beer existed in Bavaria long before light beer. This was the first type of beer to be brewed at Hofbräuhaus when it was founded. Today, when beer-lovers all over the world talk about dark beer, they usually mean a Munich style beer. Today, Hofbräu Dunkel - the archetypal Bavarian beer - is still as popular as ever. With its alcoholic content of around 5.5% volume and its spicy taste, it’s a refreshing beer that suits all kinds of occasion. A beer in the traditional Munich style!

Draught at Hofbrauhaus Munchen. Medium brown color with red rink and big light ran head. Bread crust, malty, and toasty aroma. Same flavor with light hops and a touch of mineral and bitterness in the finish. Light sweetness but a pretty attenuated and drinkable beer. Not super rich and malty. Easy liter to down. A little thin actually.

Pours brown with a slight red tint throughout and a small off-white head. Aroma is of spices and sweetness. Caramel, nutmeg, cinnamon, etc. Flavor is similar but a lot less pronounced with a toasty undertone as well. Light mouthfeel but not too bad.

Roasty malt aroma, hint of hops when freshly poured. Crystal clear, gorgeous red brown colour with a rich off-white/tan head. Crisp malty lager flavour, balanced bitterness with a roasty, lightly caramel finish.

Tap. Dark brown pour, small brown head. Aroma was malty, roasted notes. Flavor was a bit bitter. Beer was better when cooler, but still drinkable as it warmed.

Reddish/Amber in color. Clear. Very, very nice thick, creamy off white head. Really hanging around also. Leaving some nice lacing behind as I sip. Fresh smelling hops. A bit of the ’grassiness" that accompanies most German beers. Some toastiness. Maybe some faint roasted coffee. Very well balanced. Not overdone with the "grassineess". Again getting the roasted or toasted coffee in the taste. Coffee flavor is mild, not like a Stout or Porter. Picking up flavors of grain and a bit of bitterness on the backside. Medium mouthfeel that was dry"ish" and left a bit on the palate. Smooth. Very nice mouthfeel. I thought this was a very solid beer. The more I drink German brews the better I am understanding what they are about. Of the German styles I have tried and reviewed thus far this is one of the best. It’s easily drinkable and goes down all too easy.

Initial smell of smelly feet, followed by dark pumpernickel bread. Better tasting- dark malts, touch of roast, dark earthy hops.

Tap. Exceptional beer. Aromas of chocolate, vanilla, and liquorice. Taste was sweet, with long length. Palate was velvety, with a thin-to-medium body. Brown, with a frothy white head.

Darn you, green bottle! Aroma was skunked up by poor German engineering with regard to light protection...amazing that canning hasn’t become part of the Purity Law! :) Corn, funk, and musty aroma hints that at one point, it was a fairly pleasing roasty toasty grain and caramel smell. Flavor was apparently unaffected, as the sweet toffee notes popped up and mixed in nicely from start to finish atop the medium-roast malt backbone. Silky but light mouthfeel, dark brown hazy liquid tinged with amber under a small cap of light tan head. Throw this in a Warsteiner bottle and I’d venture to guess it would score a few tenths higher. Okay, okay, I swear I’m done with the soapbox on green bottles!
