Dark beer existed in Bavaria long before light beer. This was the first type of beer to be brewed at Hofbräuhaus when it was founded. Today, when beer-lovers all over the world talk about dark beer, they usually mean a Munich style beer. Today, Hofbräu Dunkel - the archetypal Bavarian beer - is still as popular as ever. With its alcoholic content of around 5.5% volume and its spicy taste, it’s a refreshing beer that suits all kinds of occasion. A beer in the traditional Munich style!

Tasted at the Hofbrauhaus. Good appearance, nice palate but flavour went missing someplace. I had expected some caramel, possibly dark malts but no, it was just a straight up and down Dunkel. I like the style, so my rating is reasonably positive but there are many better examples.

bottle thanks to swalden28. poured deep amber with an off white head. aroma was caramel, grains, and what seemed to be a touch of chocolate. flavor was caramel, grains, a touch of spice seemed to linger on the finish with a little toasted grain. body was medium with high carbonation.

A dark amber color pour with a bug lasting offwhite foamy head , leaving lots of spotty lacing ,lively carbonation . Aroma of dry caramel malt grain , toasty with some molasses, toffee ,and a wheat type tang .Flavor is dry and nutty with caramel and molasses, suprisingly complex, some earthy hops , a very slight metallic hint , probably from the carbonation, gets much better as it warms .Light body with a slightly dry but crisp and clean mouthfeel , short roasty finish , very drinkable and very good. This was all in all a great beer .

Aroma - toasted bread aroma, light on the caramel

Appearance - dark brown body, hazy with a nice 2" off-white cap

Taste - not a lot of complexity, but there is some toffee/caramel notes, light Red Vine kinda thing going on

Palate - light/medium bodied, easy in the carbonation, clearly on the smoother side of things

Overall - enjoy it and the other 5 bottles that came in the 6-pack. Nice price and nice to enjoy on a Spring weekend with some sun.

Draught at one of the Bavarian Biers Cafes in Sydney. A light brown-amber body with an ample off white head that laces nicely. Nose and taste is sweet toasted malts with coffee and mocha characteristics. Mild bitterness in the finish. Smooth and easy to drink with a medium body. An archetypal Bavarian Dunkel.

12 oz. bottle- Pours dark amber with a nice white head, aroma is gain and similar to a Euro-lager, unappealing. the flavor is like a Euro-lager only with a little more complexity and some caramel malt. Not sure if it was the green bottle in particular or if it just isn’t my style, but I will never buy this again.
