Dark beer existed in Bavaria long before light beer. This was the first type of beer to be brewed at Hofbräuhaus when it was founded. Today, when beer-lovers all over the world talk about dark beer, they usually mean a Munich style beer. Today, Hofbräu Dunkel - the archetypal Bavarian beer - is still as popular as ever. With its alcoholic content of around 5.5% volume and its spicy taste, it’s a refreshing beer that suits all kinds of occasion. A beer in the traditional Munich style!

500 ML Bottle in Germany. Dark brown tint with a very nice and full light brown head. A fine rosted malty aroma. Nice roasted malt taste with a bitter ending Palate. Better served not so cold. I wish I had mine where the guy below had his. A good solid Dunkel.

Bottled 500ml. -at the bar on top of the Kehlsteinhaus (best known as Eagle’s Nest).
Amber coloured, medium sized off-white head, dry caramel nose. Moderate roasted malt, caramel and slight bready taste with nutty notes in the finish. Average and rather boring dunkel.

Dark brown pour with off-white to light tan fluffy head. Lingering. Big caramel and toffee nose...sweet roasted barley malt. Equally roasty caramel/toffee/bread dough sweet barley malt flavors obviously in the forefront of this brew. Old world quality omnipresent here...not a huge, impressive beer...just good solid brewing excellence and understated professionalism on display. Nice!

(12oz bottle thanks to bu11zeye) very pale for a dunkel, creamy lasting head. Nose of corn, stale grain, caramel and salt. Taste of roasted nuts, roasty grain, lightly burnt toast, with a smooth creamy finish.

UPDATED: AUG 24, 2010 Location: Draft at Helmer’s, 7/30/10

Aroma: The nose is filled with slightly sweet caramel malts, and there is a little earth as well
Appearance: Pours a clearish brown with a slight red hue and a beige head that leaves spotty lace
Flavor: The taste relatively sweet, lots of caramel, malty, muc what you’d expect from the nose
Palate: It drinks really nicely, it has a smooth feel, decently long duration, and soft carbonation
Overall Impression: This is one I’ve certainly enjoyed plenty of times previously, but never rated for some reason. It’s a good stuff, and the Hofbrau name always makes me think of the beer garden, so it has that going for it as well.

Presentation: It was poured from a green 11.2oz bottle into a Pilsener glass. The bottle has no freshness date or any info other than the style. Appearance: Its body has a deep burnt coppery color with lighter amber highlights and good clarity. The pour produces a tall, foamy, light tan head with a mix of small tightly packed bubbles and bigger soapy quick fading bubbles. The settles down to a thin cap of tiny bubbles that makes very nice lacing on the glass. Smell: The nose is full and rich. There are solid notes of caramel and bready maltiness followed up by some floral/mineral like German and Czech noble hops. Taste/Palate: As in the aroma the flavor has nice caramel/bready maltiness and noble spicy/floral hops in good balance with a slight edge to the malt. In the finish it quickly fades to dryer mellow hop bitterness. The body has a medium to full body with a smooth, not to thick/not to thin, texture and carbonation. Notes: This is another all-around solid beer with good balance and drinkability.

On tap in Hahndorf at Hahndorf Inn. Light brown colour, good aroma of some light chocolate with a good, but light fruity esters. Light palate but very drinkable. This is a good beer, but nothing to really write home about, went well with my chicken parmy though!
