Dark beer existed in Bavaria long before light beer. This was the first type of beer to be brewed at Hofbräuhaus when it was founded. Today, when beer-lovers all over the world talk about dark beer, they usually mean a Munich style beer. Today, Hofbräu Dunkel - the archetypal Bavarian beer - is still as popular as ever. With its alcoholic content of around 5.5% volume and its spicy taste, it’s a refreshing beer that suits all kinds of occasion. A beer in the traditional Munich style!

Transfer from BA review on 10-22-12- Poured from bottle into pint glass Appearance – Pours a deep amber-ruby color with a big off white head. The head has a light level of retention, eventually fading to give a light of lacing. Smell – The smell is light, but consists of some light notes of a bready, caramel, and dark fruit nature. Taste – The taste starts with flavors of a lighter breadiness mixed with some sweeter malt. As the taste advances some fruit flavors come to the tongue. The fruit flavors are largely dark fruit in nature with cherry and some plum. In the end some roasted bready flavors then come to the tongue and round out some of the sweeter flavors rather nicely (but still rather sweet in the end). Mouthfeel – The body of the beer is on the lighter to average side with a carbonation level that is rather average. Both are rather nice for the brew and suit both the fruit, as well as bready flavors nicely. Overall – Easy drinking and good. A nice brew.

Malty beer with chocolatey, fruity, and some nutty notes. Acidic and astringent finish take away from the total experience. Somewhat watery.

Copper, bread and lightly roasted malt in the aroma. The taste is of caramel, burnt bread. Weak bitterness that stays for a while in the upper part of the mouth. Not at all bad beer but feels pretty mediocre. Follow me @ Kung av öl @ Facebook for more pictures and ratings.

Bottle, 500ml. Clear copper/amber with a frothy offwhite head. Gassy aroma of roasted malt, brown sugar, straw and green apples. Medium bodied with moderate carbonation. Sweet grainy character dominates, with a subtle spiciness and an earthy alcohol finish. Fairly standard.

Keg - Bavarian Bier Cafe, Manly, Sydney. Poured a clear chestnut brown with slight ruddy hues and a lasting, creamy, off-white to beige one-finger head atop. Malty-sweet aromas of caramel and dark fruits with a gentle toasty, roasty balance and nutty complexities. Medium-ish body, medium carbonation with a pleasing bittersweet length in the finish.
