COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Dark beer existed in Bavaria long before light beer. This was the first type of beer to be brewed at Hofbräuhaus when it was founded. Today, when beer-lovers all over the world talk about dark beer, they usually mean a Munich style beer. Today, Hofbräu Dunkel - the archetypal Bavarian beer - is still as popular as ever. With its alcoholic content of around 5.5% volume and its spicy taste, it’s a refreshing beer that suits all kinds of occasion. A beer in the traditional Munich style!

A rather fine dunkel in my opinion. The appearance is quite lovely. Not bitter at all and actually quite pleasant to taste.

Deep brown in the glass with minimal suds. Tastes like cold weather, autumn leaves & broken dreams. Sweet twang of rusty malts in the back ground.

500ml bottle from LCBO. 5.5% alc / vol. Pours a hazy ruby brown colour with one finger off white head. Bready lager aroma on the nose with some roasted malts. Taste is malty with a gentle hop accent and finishes with a metallic aftertaste. Medium carbonation.

UPDATED: JAN 6, 2016 Pours a clean copper-amber colour with a nice creamy-frothy beige head, good retention and creamy lacing. Munich malt smell with nutty notes and hints of caramel, dark fruits and molasses. Mouthfeel is a little oily. The taste has the dark malt as well, with mild roasted malts, bread, caramel and even hops in the finish. A little metallic feel some times. Not a bad, easy-drinking Dunkel, except for this last one (metallic notes). Great with food as you cannot notice this.

This is my first Dunkel.

Pours a mahogony color. Nice mocha color head, about 2 fingers. Decent rettention, decent lacing. It’s dark, but it’s still clear. Interesting, dark beer in a green bottle. I thought the bottle was brown.

Aroma is smoky malts. Coffee, and maybe caramel. I’m not picking up hops. It’s not super fancy, but it smells great.

Taste follows the nose. It’s sweet, and smoky. It could pass as a coffee, it smells and tastes that strong, as far as coffee goes. It’s a little bready. After a decent sit and ponder, it tastes a lot of honey. But anyhoo.

Mouthfeel is medium, but yet light. It’s clean, it’s smooth, it’s refreshing. It’s dark, but still drinkable. It’s creamy, well, it’s really good.

Overall, this is surprisingly good. I like the characteristics of this beer. I hope it’s true to the style. I’ll have to seek out other Dunkels now.

500ml bottle. Pours a clear copper colour with a creme coloured head. Very light on the nose with an unexpected note of apple juice up front with light brown sugar, and light straw like malt notes. As for taste, corn syrup, light maple syrup, a little stream of acidity, and light woodiness that leads into the darker malt notes; dark coffee, raisins, and woodiness with some light bitterness. An easy drinking session beer for the upcoming colder months.

500 ml bottle from LCBO served cool in a tulip glass. Very deep crimson mahogany with a tight light tan head. Light to moderate roasted malt, quite clean, faint sulphur, grainy malt, a slight hint of fruitiness. Medium body, medium-full carbonation. Some wet cardboard, light to moderate roasted barley, pretty clean, a slight, vague fruitiness; dry with gentle bitterness and a clean, lightly roasted barley finish. Pretty well executed for the style.
