Dark beer existed in Bavaria long before light beer. This was the first type of beer to be brewed at Hofbräuhaus when it was founded. Today, when beer-lovers all over the world talk about dark beer, they usually mean a Munich style beer. Today, Hofbräu Dunkel - the archetypal Bavarian beer - is still as popular as ever. With its alcoholic content of around 5.5% volume and its spicy taste, it’s a refreshing beer that suits all kinds of occasion. A beer in the traditional Munich style!

Murky looking dull brown/amber body, on top a cream coloured head. Slight caramel and nutty feel to the nose and taste: fairly sweet with a mild hop finish. I’d say a typical German brewpub Dunkel, nothing upsetting, but nothing extra ordinary either, drinking it fresh and surrounded by the brewing equipment makes all the difference though

Brown pour with healthy thick beige head. Scent of carmel, iron metallics. Flavors of bready sweet malt, metallic euro hops, smooth carmel too. Average carbonation, frothy mouthfeel a bit on the thin side, pretty clean finish. Nice smooth German dunkel.

Alright. Pours orangy brown with good head and lacing. Sessionable - that’s the point I guess. Tap at Bread Soda.

Clear bronze appearance with an average size, off white head and a fair amount of lacing. Toasted malt aroma with some nuttiness in the background. Moderately sweet taste of caramel malts balanced by subdued spicy hops. Medium bodied, nicely carbonated mouthfeel. Will not knock your socks off but, still, a pleasant, flavorful, traditional, session beer.

This is a classic German dunkel. The beer is an attractive deepamber that drinks much lighter than you would think based on appearance. Very good, every day, 4 season beer.

Not bad. Full flavor but light on aroma. More of a fall or winter style beer rather then spring or summer

On draft. Pours a copper brown with an off-white head. Effervescent, light mouthfeel. Tastes of clean dark malts with no sulfur or other off flavors. A fine dunkel.

Draft at sb. Pours a murky dark brown with a dense and creamy light tan head that sticks around for a while. Big malty sweet brown bread brown sugar nose. Creamy medium body with soft carb. Brown sugar brown bread mid palate. Nice, but not much going on.

Ein relativ typisches Dunkel. Ausgeprägt malzig, vom Faß etwas metallisch. Wie ich finde kommt zum Schluss ein annehmer Hopfen Geschmack hinzu.

Lovely mahogany amber with a decent top. Feint, heavy malt and nut nose. Light to medium-bodied. Rather bland, underwhelming mix of nut and caramel and munich malts. Slight nuttiness.
