Dark beer existed in Bavaria long before light beer. This was the first type of beer to be brewed at Hofbräuhaus when it was founded. Today, when beer-lovers all over the world talk about dark beer, they usually mean a Munich style beer. Today, Hofbräu Dunkel - the archetypal Bavarian beer - is still as popular as ever. With its alcoholic content of around 5.5% volume and its spicy taste, it’s a refreshing beer that suits all kinds of occasion. A beer in the traditional Munich style!

Keg - Bavarian Bier Cafe, Manly, Sydney. Poured a clear chestnut brown with slight ruddy hues and a lasting, creamy, off-white to beige one-finger head atop. Malty-sweet aromas of caramel and dark fruits with a gentle toasty, roasty balance and nutty complexities. Medium-ish body, medium carbonation with a pleasing bittersweet length in the finish.

The beer pours a deep yet clear reddish chestnut color with a medium white head. The aroma is skunky with hints of caramel malts and yeast, and the taste is quite sour and a touch umami; the mouthfeel fuses a thin texture, sour finish, medium-light body, and a soft carbonation. Overall, this beer is alright with some of the flavors having been (sadly) ruined by the green bottle.

Bottle. Green bottle.. should’ve been my fisrt clue. This shit is an awful example of the style -- skunk and caramel tick all the boxes as far as aroma and taste go, everything else is below average. I have over 700 ratings, and this is the most half-assed one I’ve done to date because this bottle of Gerry piss is the most half-assed Dunkel I’ve had to date. I’d rather drink a can of Busch Light (and for the record, I really like me some Dunkel, otherwise I wouldn’t give this such a hash critique).
