Dark beer existed in Bavaria long before light beer. This was the first type of beer to be brewed at Hofbräuhaus when it was founded. Today, when beer-lovers all over the world talk about dark beer, they usually mean a Munich style beer. Today, Hofbräu Dunkel - the archetypal Bavarian beer - is still as popular as ever. With its alcoholic content of around 5.5% volume and its spicy taste, it’s a refreshing beer that suits all kinds of occasion. A beer in the traditional Munich style!

Dark brown but clear, light malty aroma, malty flavor with a touch of caramel sweetness. Light body. Drinkable, but you’re not going to pay a lot of attention to it.

Ins Glas ergießt sich ein rötlich-braunes Bier mit schöner Schaumkrone. Geruch leicht röstmalzig, Karamell. Geschmack angenehm röstmalzig, würzig, trocken.

1liter draught at Hofbräuhaus Bremen. Clear reddish brown with a full off-white head. Medium body with moderate carbonation. Sweet with bitter tones. Yeast, grains, malts, caramel and dark fruits. A nice dunkel.

Hofbrau Dunkel on tap at Pazzo’s (Lexington, KY) clear red-brown; excellent clarity; large, creamy tan head. Aroma: light toasted grains; a bit metallic; a touch of earthy hops. Flavor: richer and better than the aroma. Lacks complexity but provides a nice blend of malts with a proper touch of hops. Feel: light bodied but not watery; medium carbonation that seems just right O: good to have a nice fresh version of the German standard, although served too cold.

On draft poured into a stein. A flat caramel cola aroma with some fall baking spices emanate from the initial pouring. As it settles, a doughy / yeast not appears as well as a very mild floral note, and a hint of mildew (maybe some undertones from the earlier yeast aroma?). The cola aroma also evolves to a more root beer aroma. It’s a rich, clear caramel brown with a light brownish / yellowish, fluffy, creamy, fizzy head. The head is consistent, small bubbles evenly distributed which dissipates slowly and leaves an abundant lacing. The taste is a mellow, medium level of sweet with a light, dry bitter. This is a thin, watery textured beer with a soft, subtle, effervescent carbonation. The medium body is mostly malty (although not overly rich) with notes of caramel, toasted bread, and maybe even a hint of chocolate. There’s also tones of spice (allspice?) in the sip. The very light, floral and citrus finish is mostly clean with a toasted grain aftertaste that doesn’t last long.

Nice, brown color with an off-white head. Sweet and spicy smell. Not incredibly carbonated...I’d say the carbonation is just right. It has a nice dunkel taste that is not overwhelming. Nothing metallic about this one. No strong aftertaste. All that’s left is a subtle reminder that it was there.

Pours a clear mahogany with a thick off-white head. My bottle was green, unlike the pic here, and aroma was a little skunky. Not a lot of active carbonation in the glass but swirling it around creates a nice creamy head. Taste is nothing special, but is not really bitter at all. It’s mostly malty hay and yeast. Not a bad dunkel.

Colour of strong sweet tea, with a short well laced head. Aroma of yeast and grains with a hint of malt. Sweet malt taste with a touch of grain. Sweet transient palate.

Sweet toffee and caramel flavors highlight this beer. This is an easy drinking, medium bodied beer.
