COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Dark beer existed in Bavaria long before light beer. This was the first type of beer to be brewed at Hofbräuhaus when it was founded. Today, when beer-lovers all over the world talk about dark beer, they usually mean a Munich style beer. Today, Hofbräu Dunkel - the archetypal Bavarian beer - is still as popular as ever. With its alcoholic content of around 5.5% volume and its spicy taste, it’s a refreshing beer that suits all kinds of occasion. A beer in the traditional Munich style!

Presentation: 11.2 oz. green bottle, served in a steidel. Appearance: Develops a one finger head that goes down into a thin ring. It’s dark caramel colored. Smell: The aroma es mostly of sweet malt, nothing else. Taste: The malt sweetness is very dominant and present but not cloying. Mouthfeel: It feels a bit watery and smooth. It has medium carbonation and it’s easy to drink because of the sweetness. Overall: Complex enough so as to not be boring, but easy enough to drink so as to not discourage drinkers not accustomed to this type of beer. It manages to be very sweet but balanced, not overwhelming. A very well made brew.

This is pretty standard dark German beer fare. Good and traditional. Sweet malty aroma. There was a small tinge of skunkiness as this was in a green bottle. Light brown and clear with average head. Even though a dark lager there was not much weight. A little watery but easy to drink. Flavors were grain, malt, sweet, maybe a little spice but overall mellow. Typical German stuff found in the US.

A decent offering. Malty aromas with notes of biscuit. Goes really well with food, and easy to drink. Nothing that’s going to blow you away but a respectable brew. I usually will get this or the hefe when I visit the hofrau in Newport.

Bottle @ home .
