Dark beer existed in Bavaria long before light beer. This was the first type of beer to be brewed at Hofbräuhaus when it was founded. Today, when beer-lovers all over the world talk about dark beer, they usually mean a Munich style beer. Today, Hofbräu Dunkel - the archetypal Bavarian beer - is still as popular as ever. With its alcoholic content of around 5.5% volume and its spicy taste, it’s a refreshing beer that suits all kinds of occasion. A beer in the traditional Munich style!

An amber beer with a thin beige head. The aroma is sweet with light caramel notes, while the flavor has stronger notes of caramel, still on a sweet background.

Bottle from The Real Ale Shop Newark. Bizarre I have have not had this before. Clear brown colour and lasting beige head. Some mild brown malt. Eady drinking in the mouth. It’s fine. Rather a light dunkel in terms of flavour but it’s fine. Light malt and easy drinking. Fine.

Bottle. It pours a clear, sparkling dark chestnut body under a creamy, fingerthick off-white head. Nice curtains. There’s a faint touch of cooked vegetables in the aroma, with raisins and prunes, some caramel and a little roasted note. The flavor has a very nice bitterness, keeping the sweetness under control. An easy task actually, as it’s a quite dry beer. Pleasant carbonation level, soft and full-bodied on the palate. Some roasted malts in the back. Lasting roasted, caramel finish with a very fine bitterness. Except for the touch of dms in the aroma, a very fine brew. 140921
