Dark beer existed in Bavaria long before light beer. This was the first type of beer to be brewed at Hofbräuhaus when it was founded. Today, when beer-lovers all over the world talk about dark beer, they usually mean a Munich style beer. Today, Hofbräu Dunkel - the archetypal Bavarian beer - is still as popular as ever. With its alcoholic content of around 5.5% volume and its spicy taste, it’s a refreshing beer that suits all kinds of occasion. A beer in the traditional Munich style!

On tap in Miami shared by Oakes. Cloudy brown pour with a decent sized beige head. Great caramel malt aroma. Flavor is full of caramel, nuts and is a bit sweet. Do yourself a favor and try the Hofbrau beers fresh on tap...what a difference.

Tap at Hofbrauhaus Las Vegas. Pours a uniformly dark brown appearance with a fairly big tan head. Some nuttiness in the nose but mostly just a dark brown lager aroma. Flavor isn’t too exciting with a sweet brown lager flavor with a bit of nuttiness. Sweet malty finish.

Best session beer of all time. IT is darker in color, but light in flavor, with just enough sweetness. The ultimate beer to session on a hot summer day.

On draught at Hofbräuhaus Las Vegas. Dark reddish brown color with a thick and rocky cream colored head. Thin lacing. The aroma is lightly roasty and malty. Medium-bodied and sweet with roasted malt and caramel flavoring. The finish is nutty and lingeringly sweet. A decent beer to accompany a bratwurst.

500ml vom fass at the biergarten Chinesischer Turm, Englischer Garten, München. Clear, deep brown body under a thin layer. Fair lacing on the glass. Aroma of sweet malts. Flavour is also dominated by sweet malts balanced by notes of dark fruits. Lingering, rounded bitter end (18.06.2007).

Bottle: Dark amber coloured, brownish medium-sized fluffy head, longer lasting; moderate malty nose (traces of caramel, roasted malts, molasses); sweet malty beginning, moderate sweet flavour; quite full bodied; distinctive sweet malty aftertaste, with a tinge of bitterness. A very good Dunkel, pleasant and decent....

Tap at St. Arnold’s in a 0.5L mug, the smallest size available. Holy ___. Deep, clear brown to deep ruby pour. Medium, soapy beige head formation. Weak retention and no lace. Nose is all detergent. Taste is soapy with saltwater. High carbonation on the palate. Very mild chocolate and cherry character, but overall there is no maltiness that say "dunkel". Really has nothing to do with the style.
