Dark beer existed in Bavaria long before light beer. This was the first type of beer to be brewed at Hofbräuhaus when it was founded. Today, when beer-lovers all over the world talk about dark beer, they usually mean a Munich style beer. Today, Hofbräu Dunkel - the archetypal Bavarian beer - is still as popular as ever. With its alcoholic content of around 5.5% volume and its spicy taste, it’s a refreshing beer that suits all kinds of occasion. A beer in the traditional Munich style!

really wanted to like this one but couldn’t quite come around. A nice dark brown pour with a caramel aroma. Tast is slightly bitter with metallic aftertaste. Flavor has strong hints of caramel.

Bottled, 500ml at The University Club, Oxford. Dark brown with cream head. Sweet malts to the fore, there is a caramelised character, sweet toffee notes and then a herby background. There is a late vanilla note. Pretty good.

Smells Malty Pours a dark caramel colour. Good amount of head that disappears quickly. Taste is a darker and sweeter version of the Munchner beer. Wish it wasn’t so sweet. Great carbonation. Little aftertaste. Overall I was very happy in my purchase. I still prefer the "light" version. MB The Beer Bearon

A very pleasant, smooth dark lager! Subtle notes of chocolate, fig, caramel, and even some coffee. Noticeable but subdue hops. This is definitely an Octoberfest staple for those liking dark seasonal beers. For those that hardly drink a darker beer or not sure if they will like one this one is a great starting point! Recommended!

Tanto no aroma quanto no sabor já se percebe a torrefação do grão. É refrescante e desceu muito bem no calor. Boa drinkabilidade.

Aroma of bread, honey, nuts, faint spicyness. Taste is similar, but body is a little thin, and doesn’t give up the depth of the aroma. Almost dry finish, clean, with a lingering dusty bitterness. Nice but sort of boring. I think I have the wrong idea about what this style should be.

Pours black with a thin head. Aroma has notes of malts, brown sugar, figs, and cut grass. Tasting notes include rich malts, brown sugar, spice, figs, and virtually no hop profile. Low carbonation, slick mouth feel, and spicy finish. This is a decent Dunkel!

Aroma suave, remetendo a canela e banana. Cor marrom e espuma marcante. Sabor refrescante com certo amargor em seu final.

Clear brown to copper pour with a lively head. Sort of big aroma with malt amd bread and some prune, meal and cereal. Medium body and fast flavour profile. Some burnt molasses note and really out of balance.

Super malty, very bready, notes of caramel, hay, and syrup. Full mouth feel, soft carb. Low bitterness, quite sweet, a little muddled at the end, lack a bit in drinkability.

Bottle from the LCBO. Clear copper-hued brown with a small tan head. Nice aroma of roasted malt, dried leaves, bitter-sweet cocoa, bit of freshly baked sugar cookie. Medium-thin body. Elegant flavour of roast malt, tobacco leaf, hints of maple and chocolate, a bit of smoke, and medium-dry finish with some twiggy hop notes. Rather good!
