Dark beer existed in Bavaria long before light beer. This was the first type of beer to be brewed at Hofbräuhaus when it was founded. Today, when beer-lovers all over the world talk about dark beer, they usually mean a Munich style beer. Today, Hofbräu Dunkel - the archetypal Bavarian beer - is still as popular as ever. With its alcoholic content of around 5.5% volume and its spicy taste, it’s a refreshing beer that suits all kinds of occasion. A beer in the traditional Munich style!

Presentation: 11.2 oz. green bottle, served in a steidel. Appearance: Develops a one finger head that goes down into a thin ring. It’s dark caramel colored. Smell: The aroma es mostly of sweet malt, nothing else. Taste: The malt sweetness is very dominant and present but not cloying. Mouthfeel: It feels a bit watery and smooth. It has medium carbonation and it’s easy to drink because of the sweetness. Overall: Complex enough so as to not be boring, but easy enough to drink so as to not discourage drinkers not accustomed to this type of beer. It manages to be very sweet but balanced, not overwhelming. A very well made brew.

From Hipercor. In Teku glass. Reading CPPHTP10 Ch16. Very drinkable, but have gone up my head more quickly than expected, not sure why as its ABV is pretty low

Pours a gorgeous dark garnet with a moderate off white froth on top. Aroma is sweet caramel and malt with some small hop presence and slight spice. Taste is smooth and moderate body, sweet caramel with low hop bitterness and a small spice that comes in at the end.

LCBO shelf filler. Malty, with a touch of an edge. So-so drinkability. Medium brown colour. OK.

Spicy earthy nose with bakers chocolate and roast malt. Pours a dark chestnut and holds a thick white creamy head. Full creamy body. Dark malts meld seemlessly with muted coppery hops to deliver a very clean and flavorful lager. Certainly a benchmark for the dunkel style. These are dangerously drinkable.
