COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Dark beer existed in Bavaria long before light beer. This was the first type of beer to be brewed at Hofbräuhaus when it was founded. Today, when beer-lovers all over the world talk about dark beer, they usually mean a Munich style beer. Today, Hofbräu Dunkel - the archetypal Bavarian beer - is still as popular as ever. With its alcoholic content of around 5.5% volume and its spicy taste, it’s a refreshing beer that suits all kinds of occasion. A beer in the traditional Munich style!

Presentation: 11.2 oz. green bottle, served in a steidel. Appearance: Develops a one finger head that goes down into a thin ring. It’s dark caramel colored. Smell: The aroma es mostly of sweet malt, nothing else. Taste: The malt sweetness is very dominant and present but not cloying. Mouthfeel: It feels a bit watery and smooth. It has medium carbonation and it’s easy to drink because of the sweetness. Overall: Complex enough so as to not be boring, but easy enough to drink so as to not discourage drinkers not accustomed to this type of beer. It manages to be very sweet but balanced, not overwhelming. A very well made brew.

Pours a clear cola brown with a fairly thick and fluffy pale buff head. Malty aroma has caramel and fruity undertones. Flavor is malty at heart, with subtle toasty and fruity notes and a hint of caramel. Texture is average, but it goes down well. If not terrific, certainly drinkable.

Pretty average dunkel, nothing really stands out with this offering. The body and flavors were a bit on the lighter side. There was a good bready malt flavor with a touch of hoppiness.

Medium reddish brown with one finger tan head that lingers awhile. Aroma of honey and hay. Malty caramel up front with a little hop bitterness on the finish. Light watery palate.

Mild chocolaty flavor. Hops barely present. A bit sweet. Not complex. Reddish brown in color, dark but not cloudy. Smells a bit cidery. Thin head.

From the tap. Good dunkel overall. Poured brown with brownish foam. Smooth, with medium body. Slightly sweet. Long finish.

Deep clear mahogany brown. Off white head that starts about a half in or so and levels to film like cover. The spicy caramel malt aroma is subtle. Sweet rich toasted on the tongue. Has a spicy Earth like quality. Has a pleasantly and sweet after taste. Leaves me wanting more and I do. I’d certainly recommend this one.

Very sweet. Dark. Sour. Something just doesn’t fit. It kind of coats the tongue and that’s not good. Looks better than it tastes.

Bottle. Clear brown color, medium tan head. Aroma of caramel and subtle nuts, toast. Taste is very malt forward caramel, but a bit on the plain side.
