COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Dark beer existed in Bavaria long before light beer. This was the first type of beer to be brewed at Hofbräuhaus when it was founded. Today, when beer-lovers all over the world talk about dark beer, they usually mean a Munich style beer. Today, Hofbräu Dunkel - the archetypal Bavarian beer - is still as popular as ever. With its alcoholic content of around 5.5% volume and its spicy taste, it’s a refreshing beer that suits all kinds of occasion. A beer in the traditional Munich style!

Presentation: 11.2 oz. green bottle, served in a steidel. Appearance: Develops a one finger head that goes down into a thin ring. It’s dark caramel colored. Smell: The aroma es mostly of sweet malt, nothing else. Taste: The malt sweetness is very dominant and present but not cloying. Mouthfeel: It feels a bit watery and smooth. It has medium carbonation and it’s easy to drink because of the sweetness. Overall: Complex enough so as to not be boring, but easy enough to drink so as to not discourage drinkers not accustomed to this type of beer. It manages to be very sweet but balanced, not overwhelming. A very well made brew.

Bottle. Dark ruby with a thin off white head. Aroma is skunked unfortunately but some dark fruit comes through. Taste follows and adds toffee and nuttiness. Slick creamy mouthfeel. Would have enjoyed this quite a bit if the green glass hadn’t ruined it.

on tap at bier markt, ottawa. unclear light brown pour, orange tint, small off-white head, minimal retention/lacing. spicy toasted nuts and caramel, fruity coffee berries, some dirt, some sweetness - maple syrup, grass, pepper, hint of cardboard. light carbonation, light body, semi-sweet and peppery-herbal finish. barely o-k and it’s not even a dusty old shelf leftover in a shady beer store.

This was a bit too boozy for me. Poured dark brown, with a malty nose. Flavor was malt, and boozy. Not my favorite.

Woody brown / red colour - nice and clear with a small but lasting frothy white head. Medium body and carb. Aroma isn’t strong but there is a nice hint of spice and pepper. Strong malt presence in the taste giving toffee and the yeast brings through some spice. Nice and drinkable.

A general flavor mass produced beer. Good balance but a boring beer in general. But ok when free. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Vackert rödbrun färg och stabilt skum. Smakmässigt är den inte särskilt spännande. En öl gjort för att bälgas snarare än sippas för den intensiva smakens skull.

Bottle that poured a translucent dark brown with an off white cream head that dissipated quickly leaving a small amount of lace. The aroma is hay, caramel and bread dough, while the taste is sweet. The flavor is more caramel than anything else. The texture is creamy and leaves a slight coating on the tongue. Overall, it is easy to drink.

500cc bottle and on tap at the brew house. It is a light coloured dunkel. Pretty much a benchmark for the style. Sweet start and finish. Lots of maltyness and caramel. Light roasty notes.

This was poured into a pilsener glass. The appearance was a decent semi-dark brown color with a one finger white to off white foamy head that lingers for a slim minute. Light lacing stuck around the glass. The smell had a slight "smoked" sweet semi-meat like quality. However, I must admit there’s still that slight "skunk" to it. It’s there but probably would be more prevalent within three weeks. The taste copied the smell leaving out the smell leaving out the skunkiness. The meaty to smokey quality comes across. On the palate, this one sat about a light on the body with a pretty good sessionability about it. As a Munich Dunkel, the carbonation seemed appropriately styled as it came across fairly smooth. Overall, I say this was a decent Munich Dunkel. Wishing there would be a date somewhere on the bottle or the company would do away with green bottles.
