COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Dark beer existed in Bavaria long before light beer. This was the first type of beer to be brewed at Hofbräuhaus when it was founded. Today, when beer-lovers all over the world talk about dark beer, they usually mean a Munich style beer. Today, Hofbräu Dunkel - the archetypal Bavarian beer - is still as popular as ever. With its alcoholic content of around 5.5% volume and its spicy taste, it’s a refreshing beer that suits all kinds of occasion. A beer in the traditional Munich style!

Presentation: 11.2 oz. green bottle, served in a steidel. Appearance: Develops a one finger head that goes down into a thin ring. It’s dark caramel colored. Smell: The aroma es mostly of sweet malt, nothing else. Taste: The malt sweetness is very dominant and present but not cloying. Mouthfeel: It feels a bit watery and smooth. It has medium carbonation and it’s easy to drink because of the sweetness. Overall: Complex enough so as to not be boring, but easy enough to drink so as to not discourage drinkers not accustomed to this type of beer. It manages to be very sweet but balanced, not overwhelming. A very well made brew.

Tap @ Bock Beer Restaurant, Athens, 04/03/15. Pours a reddish brown with a good, brownish head. Aroma is raisin, bread, some fruitiness. Taste is bready, some raisin, dark malt. Light with high carbonation.

Pours dark with a thin head. Aroma doesn't jump out of the glass; quite timid despite the strong Amber color. Flavor is bold on the palette but easy drinking. Several glasses can be consumed in short order without effort! Not an amazing beer but an easy choice if you want something dark. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Colore rosso scuro/marrone, bella schiuma. Odore di malto, sapore dolce di malto, temperato dall’amaro sul finale, anche se la bilancia dei sapori pende dalla parte del dolce. Una più che onesta rossa a bassa fermentazione.

11.2oz Bottle at home. Pours very clean dark bronze, light offwhite head fades quickly. Very strong grape, sweet red wine scent, bit of dark malt. Taste more red grape, lightly malted, some type of wood. I’m not getting the spice or malt balance that I expected. Bit too sweet to be a good drinking beer for me.

This one is very german malted. Not really my style as the malt and sweetness over powers it.

Bottle. Clear but, very dark Amber. Pilsner malt, corn and biscuit aroma. The taste adds sweet light caramel and earthy hops. Clean finish, but bland overall. Decent. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Aromas of bread, biscuit, and grass. Clear brown, off-white head is somewhat lasting. Definite malt sweetness upfront, remains malt-forward throughout, very bready. Medium bodied.

Bottle at home. Pours a dark caramel color, two fingers of white foamy head. Aroma of light caramel malts, spices, a bit of nuttiness. Taste is lightly sweet, a bit of caramel and toffee. Malts, cereal. Medium body, not overly carbonated. Not a bad beer, my first of this style.

Pours a light coppery orange, perfectly clear, with a few overactive champagne bubbles. A bubbly head, light khaki in color, disappears quickly and leaves only a light ring around the liquid. Smells yeasty, with apples, some toasted malts, maybe even some dark chocolate. Pretty sweet aroma. Tastes of sweet apples, lightly toasted caramel malts, and ritz crackers. Sweet, with a small spicy bitter tang in the aftertaste. Light hoppy bitterness hugs the sides of the tongue, while the beer hits home with a hint of nutty flavor at the finish. A body verging on thin, yet pretty smooth, and the subtle carbonation is perfect and crisp.
