COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Dark beer existed in Bavaria long before light beer. This was the first type of beer to be brewed at Hofbräuhaus when it was founded. Today, when beer-lovers all over the world talk about dark beer, they usually mean a Munich style beer. Today, Hofbräu Dunkel - the archetypal Bavarian beer - is still as popular as ever. With its alcoholic content of around 5.5% volume and its spicy taste, it’s a refreshing beer that suits all kinds of occasion. A beer in the traditional Munich style!

Aroma of toasted almonds. Taste is nutty, malty, with a small hop presence to make it refreshing.

This beer pours a clear dark copper with a thick creamy white head that left plenty of lacing around the glass. The aroma is very malty, sweet malts. I also pick up some faint hops and bread as well. The taste is very similar to the aroma. Up front you pick up the sweet malts and possibly some caramel and brown bread. On the back end you pick up a faint hop bitterness to balance out the beer. I really enjoyed this beer and highly recommend it!

on tap hofbrauhaus las vegas: i had never tried this beer in munich or las vegas but after having a couple of weissebiers i need something i could quaff to the music...i needed a handle! if anybody knows about beer it is hofbrauhaus and this was no exception it came in a perfect dimpled mug with HB logo and a huge frothy head overflowing.(looked like something out of a magazine) dark brown in color with very malty nose and toffee overtones. tasted like is smelled very malty, what you would expect for this beer, very little to no hop character, smooth and honey taste at the finish. overall an enjoyable brew. ive only had a few dunkels in my time but i think this one stacked up quite well. Prost!

A dark brown coloured beer with a reddish hue, topped with a thickish, off white head. Alight, toasted malt nose, with some hint of hop in the background. The taste is light, but with plenty of body. malty, but not too sweet, and enough hop flavour to balance the taste. The finish is smooth and malty. (Draught, by the mass(!) - @ the Hofbräuhaus, Munich).

So this is my first rating, but im not new to the world of beers. me and my friend first had this beer at j and r’s steak house on tap and we both loved it. We went to a usual beer distributor and couldnt find it. Today we went to a different one, found it, got so excited we split case of 24. we bought out the stores selection. im rating the beer now as i drink it out of a glass, and honestly, theres a noticable difference between how it was on tap and how it is now. However, it still tastes great and it was a pleasure to have as my first rated beer. now onto the rating, when i first opened the bottle i could smell it, it smelt great and it got me extremely excited. its dark brown, almost looks like a jack and coke. the head disappeared pretty quick. it feels great in the mouth, the taste is great. definately a beer ill buy again, though my fridge will be stocked with it for a month

UPDATED: JAN 19, 2009 Not that it matters but I had this on a beautiful day at my local Flying Saucer. Anyhoo, creamy off white head and dark amber in color. Rather heavy molasses aroma with roasted nutty notes mixed in. Coupled with a toasty malt flavor and a touch of sweetness thrown in. Overall a nice easy drinking beer.

Pours a dark red color with a small tan head. Aroma of malt and sugar cane. Taste a little like brown sugar with bitterness to counterbalance. a very good and refreshing beer.

500ml glass at Hofbraü München, Klagenfurt. Head is large and thick white. Yeasty aroma with some hops coming through as well. Colour is dark red with a ruby orange hue. Taste is bready, with pronounced spice and lightly sweet maltiness. Carbonation is medium high. Aftertaste is yeasty and complex. Really like this. Great on a cold winter's day. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
