Dark beer existed in Bavaria long before light beer. This was the first type of beer to be brewed at Hofbräuhaus when it was founded. Today, when beer-lovers all over the world talk about dark beer, they usually mean a Munich style beer. Today, Hofbräu Dunkel - the archetypal Bavarian beer - is still as popular as ever. With its alcoholic content of around 5.5% volume and its spicy taste, it’s a refreshing beer that suits all kinds of occasion. A beer in the traditional Munich style!

So this is my first rating, but im not new to the world of beers. me and my friend first had this beer at j and r’s steak house on tap and we both loved it. We went to a usual beer distributor and couldnt find it. Today we went to a different one, found it, got so excited we split case of 24. we bought out the stores selection. im rating the beer now as i drink it out of a glass, and honestly, theres a noticable difference between how it was on tap and how it is now. However, it still tastes great and it was a pleasure to have as my first rated beer. now onto the rating, when i first opened the bottle i could smell it, it smelt great and it got me extremely excited. its dark brown, almost looks like a jack and coke. the head disappeared pretty quick. it feels great in the mouth, the taste is great. definately a beer ill buy again, though my fridge will be stocked with it for a month

UPDATED: JAN 19, 2009 Not that it matters but I had this on a beautiful day at my local Flying Saucer. Anyhoo, creamy off white head and dark amber in color. Rather heavy molasses aroma with roasted nutty notes mixed in. Coupled with a toasty malt flavor and a touch of sweetness thrown in. Overall a nice easy drinking beer.

500ml glass at Hofbraü München, Klagenfurt. Head is large and thick white. Yeasty aroma with some hops coming through as well. Colour is dark red with a ruby orange hue. Taste is bready, with pronounced spice and lightly sweet maltiness. Carbonation is medium high. Aftertaste is yeasty and complex. Really like this. Great on a cold winter's day. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

11.2 ounce bottle poured into a brandy snifter. Pours a darker ruby with a velvety beige head of foam. The aroma has notes of toasted bread, toffee, and roast. The taste is sweet and toasty. Very light bodied. Spritzy carbonation. Nice.

330 ml bottle into pilsener glass, bottled on 5/14/2012. Pours fairly clear dark copper color with a 1 finger dense light khaki head with nice retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Light spotty soapy lacing clings down the glass, with a good amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of caramel, apple, pear, raisin, toast, dark bread, molasses, herbal, floral, and earthy hops. Nice and pleasant aromas with good strength and balance. Taste of caramel, pear, apple, toffee, toast, dark bread, light chocolate, cracker grain, herbal, floral, grass, and earthy hops. Lingering notes of caramel, light fruits, toast, toffee, dark bread, light chocolate, cracker, grass, floral, and herbal on the finish for a short bit. Very nice flavor balance and robustness of dark malty flavors; with nice light floral hop balance; and zero cloying flavors present after the finish. Medium carbonation and body; with a creamy, lightly sick, and fairly crisp mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with hardly any warming noticed after the finish. Overall this is a very good dunkel lager. Nicely robust and balanced flavors; and extremely smooth to drink. A nicely enjoyable offering.

Bottle. Hint of "skunky" in the bottle ater cap is removed. Pours a rich copper to brown, clear with a rocky near-tan head. At first. aroma is almost all noble hops with all of their spice and earthy notes and thankfully the skunky air was just in the bottle headspace. Halway through this 11.2oz bottle the malts pick up in the aroma. The taste I get is richly malty with toast, bread crust, hints of caramel and a sweetness that suggests plenty of residual sugar, There is a subtle bittterness which lets the complex yet focused malt character shine thorough. The body is wonderfully medium-light and lets the flavor of the malt shine through. Overall I like it but the sweetness is too much for me to really enjoy in this example. I have not tried enough Dunkels for me to know if the sweetness level is standard or correct, but I am going to work on that.
