COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Dark beer existed in Bavaria long before light beer. This was the first type of beer to be brewed at Hofbräuhaus when it was founded. Today, when beer-lovers all over the world talk about dark beer, they usually mean a Munich style beer. Today, Hofbräu Dunkel - the archetypal Bavarian beer - is still as popular as ever. With its alcoholic content of around 5.5% volume and its spicy taste, it’s a refreshing beer that suits all kinds of occasion. A beer in the traditional Munich style!

Pours black brown. Nice smooth roasted aroma. Flavor is also smooth, but lacking impact - almost watery. Low to medium body. I love my dark lagers and this is so so. Plenty of good American craft breweries putting out better.

Pours an amber ruby color with lacing and off white head aroma of grass, sweet caramel malt ...... taste of sweet caramel and grassy with some light bittering in the finish... pretty long aftertaste ..... an easy drinking beer

bottle thanks to swalden28. poured deep amber with an off white head. aroma was caramel, grains, and what seemed to be a touch of chocolate. flavor was caramel, grains, a touch of spice seemed to linger on the finish with a little toasted grain. body was medium with high carbonation.

Bottle in Berlin. Dark, cereals, some caramel, decent balance. Fine with food, but no need to go out of your way for this.

Das Hofbräu Dunkel hat mich nicht ganz überzeugt. Der guten Süffigkeit stehen eine überschwere Malzigkeit und nur durchschnittliche Hopfenbittere entgegen. Leichte Röstaromen im Nachhall. Test vom 6.12.2006, Gebinde: Glasflasche

It’s taste is not as exceptional and speaks it’s brand as other Hofbrauhaus variants but overall a pretty good Dunkel. A bit bitter, nice foam.

Big creamy beige lasting head. Clear deep red body with strong fast carbonation. Faint caramelly aroma. Dry-sweetish roasty earty caramelly taste. Mid-bodied. Soft, mild, slightly fizzy mouthfeel. Dryish peppery spicy caramelly aftertaste with roasty sugar and mint notes. Minty spicy notes linger for a long time. (0.5l draft at Bavarius, Moscow, Russia.)

Pretty solid beer, good when you want something darker but not too crazy. Well balanced brew that leans towards the malty side of things. Goes down smooth, very tasty.

Brown beer with a tan head. Aromas and flavours are medium to heavy. Plenty of caramel on the nose, malts as well. Mostly sweet taste, but some bitterness for balance.
