Dark beer existed in Bavaria long before light beer. This was the first type of beer to be brewed at Hofbräuhaus when it was founded. Today, when beer-lovers all over the world talk about dark beer, they usually mean a Munich style beer. Today, Hofbräu Dunkel - the archetypal Bavarian beer - is still as popular as ever. With its alcoholic content of around 5.5% volume and its spicy taste, it’s a refreshing beer that suits all kinds of occasion. A beer in the traditional Munich style!

(Tap) Pours dark brown with off-white/brown head. Some sweet caramel in the taste. Not very bitter. The mouthfeel was slightly watery, but OK.

The aroma is sweet toasted cereal grains, chocolate, and caramel. The appearance is red brown with a thin head. The flavor is like the aroma with more bitterness than expected but its far from being really bitter. The palate is thin but not bad. This is a good Dunkel.

500ml vom fass at the biergarten Chinesischer Turm, Englischer Garten, München. Clear, deep brown body under a thin layer. Fair lacing on the glass. Aroma of sweet malts. Flavour is also dominated by sweet malts balanced by notes of dark fruits. Lingering, rounded bitter end (18.06.2007).

Thanks to ghawener. As with this type of beer, malt dominates this brew. Pours out nicely, amber color with a nice creamy head. Sweet malts that lingers in your mouth.

Brown with some bubbles, big thick frothy head. Caramel scent. Quite sweet, slightly watery with a light carbonation. Malty in the mouth, with toffee in the aftertaste. Good.

Pours a fairly clear rddish brown, with a big creamy light tan head. Smells more on the fruity side, definite grapes, maybe some apple, and dark sweet malts as well. Fairly thin bodied, tasted of dark fruits and sweet malts thatI got in the nose. Could definitely use some depth here. Very easy drinking dunkel, although nothing special about it at all. Very avergae brew, but wasnt expecting greatness.

(Draught@Rymy-Eetu) Dark cola brown with a small, lasting head. Sweetish-caramely-malty aroma with some licorice hints. Sweetish and caramely-malty flavor with mild roastiness in the dry and mildly ashy finish. Medium-bodied with medium carbonation. A clean and reasonably balanced, but straightforward dunkel.

On tap at the Hofbräuhaus. A dark brown colour with a good head. Aroma is sweet and malty. Taste is also malty with some sweetness. Fairly unimpressive.

(7/4/08) Draught at the brewpub in Munich. Served in a 1L mug. Dark brown with a medium beige head. Aroma of toasted malt, some bread and caramel. Sweet flavor with caramelly malt and light toastiness. Medium-bodied but maybe slightly too light. Acceptable.

I pick up a single green bottle at Pat-apostrophe-s Liquors in Porter IN. It pours a clear caramel/amber body with a tall and creamy beige head. It’s got a sweet malty aroma with a touch of rust and mineral water. The flavor drops those last two, lightly toasts the malts, and adds an herbal bitterness. Good session lager.
