Dark beer existed in Bavaria long before light beer. This was the first type of beer to be brewed at Hofbräuhaus when it was founded. Today, when beer-lovers all over the world talk about dark beer, they usually mean a Munich style beer. Today, Hofbräu Dunkel - the archetypal Bavarian beer - is still as popular as ever. With its alcoholic content of around 5.5% volume and its spicy taste, it’s a refreshing beer that suits all kinds of occasion. A beer in the traditional Munich style!

(7/4/08) Draught at the brewpub in Munich. Served in a 1L mug. Dark brown with a medium beige head. Aroma of toasted malt, some bread and caramel. Sweet flavor with caramelly malt and light toastiness. Medium-bodied but maybe slightly too light. Acceptable.

I pick up a single green bottle at Pat-apostrophe-s Liquors in Porter IN. It pours a clear caramel/amber body with a tall and creamy beige head. It’s got a sweet malty aroma with a touch of rust and mineral water. The flavor drops those last two, lightly toasts the malts, and adds an herbal bitterness. Good session lager.

Average dunkel from Hofbrau. On draft from Mr. Dunderbaks. Nice malty and caramel balance--smooth and not too strong.

Poured a clear reddish-brown hue with a off white had that had a slight retention. Aroma had mostly floral notes to it. Flavor initially was slightly sweet with caramel malts but a nice bread not balanced it out. Flavor was smooth throughout but the carbonation was elevated and was somewhat annoying. Still a decent refreshing beer.

Pours black brown. Nice smooth roasted aroma. Flavor is also smooth, but lacking impact - almost watery. Low to medium body. I love my dark lagers and this is so so. Plenty of good American craft breweries putting out better.

Hofbrauhaus Munchen--Munich, Germany--Hofbrau Dunkel. 5.50% ABV. 10 IBU’s? Off white mild lace head. Clear thin brown color with a hint of amber. Light roasted soft hop front. Mellow sweet smooth dunkel minimal chocolate light roasted lager body. Clean mild hop end. Nice version of bland style. (3.5 / 5.0) Sampled 5 oz. Taste @ Fremont Oktoberfest in Seattle on 9/25/2010.

Green 12 oz. bottle poured to my SA Lager glass, with a clear, mahogany hue, abundant and creamy, off white foam to the head, and curtainy ribbons of lacing. The aroma was light toast and cookie notes, some sweet caramel, a hint of cocoa, but a light metallic hint toward the back. The flavor added smooth malt, good carbonation, and complimentary, but moderate hop bitterness. A decent, representative Dunkel, except for the flawed aroma.
