COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Dark beer existed in Bavaria long before light beer. This was the first type of beer to be brewed at Hofbräuhaus when it was founded. Today, when beer-lovers all over the world talk about dark beer, they usually mean a Munich style beer. Today, Hofbräu Dunkel - the archetypal Bavarian beer - is still as popular as ever. With its alcoholic content of around 5.5% volume and its spicy taste, it’s a refreshing beer that suits all kinds of occasion. A beer in the traditional Munich style!

Brown beer with a tan head. Aromas and flavours are medium to heavy. Plenty of caramel on the nose, malts as well. Mostly sweet taste, but some bitterness for balance.

Pours a cola brown with aroma of roasted caramel. Taste is very easy drinking smooth. A light bitterness with a mild creamy end after the swallow. A very enjoyable dunkel that I’d drink again.

Pours chestnut brown, fluffy off white head which settles to a thin line. Wood, caramel and lots of spicy yeast on the nose. Taste follows aroma almost exactly, with a sour twist towards the end. Not much body, shortish finish. My first Dunkel so Ive no context for my rating, though quite enjoyable.

Sampled at the Texas Craft Brew fest, my score is based off of some incoherent notes and a 2 oz sample.

This is pretty standard dark German beer fare. Good and traditional. Sweet malty aroma. There was a small tinge of skunkiness as this was in a green bottle. Light brown and clear with average head. Even though a dark lager there was not much weight. A little watery but easy to drink. Flavors were grain, malt, sweet, maybe a little spice but overall mellow. Typical German stuff found in the US.

Bottle. Pours a clear light brown body with a small fizzy beige head that faded fairly quickly. The nose is slightly bready and lightly roasted malt with a little graininess. The flavor is fairly bland really, just a light bready, nutty, and toasty malt base with a little sweetness on the finish. Lighter bodied with just a little stickiness on the finish. Moderate soft fizzy carbonation. Overall, a rather bland and boring effort, but easy enough to finish a single bottle.
