Commercial Description:
Dark beer existed in Bavaria long before light beer. This was the first type of beer to be brewed at Hofbräuhaus when it was founded. Today, when beer-lovers all over the world talk about dark beer, they usually mean a Munich style beer. Today, Hofbräu Dunkel - the archetypal Bavarian beer - is still as popular as ever. With its alcoholic content of around 5.5% volume and its spicy taste, it’s a refreshing beer that suits all kinds of occasion. A beer in the traditional Munich style!

bottled. pours dark mahogony with minimal white head. Smells of floral hops and yeast. A medium sour bite on the tongue. It is a light bodied thin feeling beer. It really tastes like every other german lager with a hint of caramel. Not bad, An average beer.

355 ml bottle purchased as part of a mix a six at Lukas, Kansas City, Missouri. L 202 I 09:57 stamped on the label. Pour is clear ruby brown with a two inch egg white head. Head is lasting, eventually falls with pretty lacing. Aroma of soft caramel and hazelnut, nice straw element underneath that. Taste is the caramel sweetness up front, though it is pretty brash and fake tasting, really does not have the soft sweetness of the nose. Under the caramel is the hazelnut which carries through to the finish. As this opened up some, the sweetness mellowed a touch. Palate is a bit oily, thin bodied with active carbonation. The aftertaste features some of the chemical sweetness and detracts. I am sure this is nicer fresh.

Draught, Hofbrauhaus Munchen Cola-like in appearance. Flavour also has a bit of cola-like quality to it. Slight toffee sweetness with a lingering dry finish. Reasonably decent example.

Tap at Berry park. Poured a rich dark caramel. Nose was sweet, slightly spicy, a bit musty. Typically thin bodied with small bubbly carbonation. Not much up front a bit sweet. Mostly malty and creamy taste. Finish is bitter. An easy drinker with more flavor than most. But in the end it’s really not that easy for me to drink.
