By tradition, the first barrel of Maibock is tapped in the Hofbräuhaus in the last week of April, in time for the merry month of May. The success story of Munich’s oldest bock beer goes back as far as 1614. With its powerfully aromatic flavour and its alcoholic content of some 7.2% volume, Hofbräu Maibock marks one of the high points in the beer-lover’s calendar!

Bottle sample at a tasting at Beer Market Jaffa. Thanks kerenmk. Clear deep golden with an off-white head. Aroma of malt, some graininess, bread, a herbal hint and an alcoholic touch. Sweetish flavor, malt, a bit alcoholic, with grains and a slightly bitterish finish with a herbal hint. Medium-bodied.

12 oz bottle into a tulip glass. Pours a clear dark copper, with a large fluffy beige head which fades into a disc on the surface and leaves good lacing. Nose is sweet malt. Taste is caramel and malt, with a moderate mouth feel and a short, sweet finish. Pretty good exemplar of the style.

Pours a dark amber with tan head. Has a malty and dark fruit aroma. Taste is similar with aroma buy with a bit of dark liquor included.

Bottle from old backlog notes 07. Pours a clear amber color with a small off white head. The aroma and flavor have sweet bready malts, caramel, nuts, some spicy hops, earthy, not bad, just not a style I prefer.

Draft at sb. Pours a crystal clear medium amber with golden edges. Loose white head. Big malty sweet caramel brown bread nose. Creamy medium body with soft carb. Toasty caramel mid palate with a long bready finish.

Pours a clear amber color with off-white head. Floral notes, some caramel malts, and some light spice on the nose; follows onto the palate. Finishes with more malt.

Bottle, 330ml. An orange clear beer with a frothy head that fades away after a minute or two. Medium to strong floral aroma with some spices and a considerable amount of alcohol. Taste is not very strong and slightly bitter at the end. It also has a medium alcohol finish and is heavy on astringency and carbonatation.

Bottle, 355ml. Pours clear amber/orange with a modest tan head with plenty of carbonation that recedes the head almost instantly. Aroma is all about the toasted character: caramel, sweet and roasted malts, with hints of alcohol, dry fruits and cereal. Medium to low body, but not watery. Perhaps a bit flat with little astringency. Strong malt backbone and bitter finish to match. Good, very drinkable beer.

Bottle pour. Clean amber, with creamy white head. Sweet aroma of fruit cake, girl scout cookies, and distant grassy hops. Sweet taste, with malt dominate. Plums and cherries. Hint of caramel. Medium body.

Appearance: clear copper/amber, with a short, creamy white head. Aroma: aromatic, with caramel and toffee malts, graham cracker, a hint of cinnamon, and a surprising dose of yeasty spice. Taste: sweet caramel malts, touch of black pepper, delicate and subdued earthy hops. Finish: hint of root beer and mineral water under crisp, warm bread and that slightly spicy note. Notes: If the palate weren’t so smooth and refreshing, this could have seemed a bit like a Christmas beer. Really, really good. Easy drinking and tasty; one of my new favorites in the style.
