The Munich Beer Festival, or Oktoberfest, is an event of superlatives - it’s the largest popular festival in the world, staging in the beer metropolis of Munich. Millions of visitors from all over the world flock along every year to enjoy its very special atmosphere. For this occasion, Hofbräu brews a rich, full-bodied beer which goes down ideally with traditional Bavarian cuisine. With its deliciously bitter taste and alcoholic content of 6.3% volume, Hofbräu Oktoberfestbier is as special as the Beer Festival itself.

Bottle. Poured clear amber with a large frothy white head that was mostly lasting with good lacing. Moderate grassy sour citrus aroma. Medium body with a smooth texture. Medium sweet flavor with a medium bitter finish of moderate duration. My expectations where met.

Draft a brewpub. Dark amber with moderate off-white head that diminished slowly and had good lacing. Moderate aroma of hops. Medium body. Moderate flavor of spicy hops with small bitter finish.

Draft at Newport brewery. Pours yellow orange with white head. Mild spicy hop aroma. Texture is slightly effervescent and thin. Pale malt and grainy maltiness in the flavor, followed by a spicy hop finish. Finish was semi-dry, soapy and grainy, not that great. I am rather surprised that a german brew house would have a mediocre octoberfest.

Not my idea of an Oktoberfest, but a good German beernonetheless. Skunky aroma with some yeasty carbonation. Fluffy white head. Malty taste up front backed by a mild hop finish.

Tasted 18/07/2006. 355ml bottle from Regional Wines and Spirits, Wellington. Pale gold, bright, with a brief white head. Light lace. Honey, biscuit and grass on the nose at first; pollen-like yeast notes and a slight mettalic aroma come later. More honey sweetness in the mouth, with a grassy, spicy middle and a lingering herbal note in the finish. Medium weight, tending light, with a slight carbonic bite that I’d prefer not to get. Very well made. Good but well short of inspiring.

Pour is orange-light amber in color, with a small head, little retention or lacing. Very interesting spiced hop bouquet, and I think I’m picking up just a touch of pine. Definitive spice and pear in flavor with nice hop undertones. I’m getting a very interesting nectarine finish, again with spice. Interesting complexity makes for a very interesting brew.

UPDATED: DEC 27, 2009 500ml bottle from Cask & Glass. Amber gold colour with lasting white head. Slightly sweet lager aroma, some spice in mouth. Yep, it’s a fine, slightly complex beer with a slight edge to it on the end. 2.6/5 Bottle at Chriso’s Kook Tasting 09. Some raspberry, strawberry fruit and yes, some cardboard, but I love lager. Fantastic.

My local bottle shop must have just flown these in, because this one was also very good. Very pale in colour for the style, golden with a thin white head. Aroma is a little bit skunky, but not too bad. Underneath is some good, if simple, pale malt sweetness. Quite bready. Flavour is similar but leans more toward toast than the aroma suggests. Not much in the way of hop flavour, maybe a bit of grassiness. Lingering fresh grain sweetness. A bit too sweet, but still good.

Very light in color and body. Aroma has some roasting ear corn and is pleasant but muted.

UPDATED: MAR 5, 2007 12oz Bottle: Orangey golden pour with a consistant white head. Crisp malt body, light anise like spicyness and a clean finish. Solid and highly drinkable.
