3.3 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
This may not count, but I pulled a bottle of the ’Royal brewer’s Oktoberfest bier’ out of the cellar, completely forgotten about as it was dated Sep ’03. Thought "what the hell", and poured it into a tall stein. Pungent, rich melon-citrus and burnt caramel aroma, wafted out continuously. A short dense head formed atop a hazy honey gold body. Medium bodied with intense sweet malt made up the slightly gummy palate. Hints of orange juice and concentrated apricot syrup, a mild ethanol feel and light well lagered carbonation. This was obviously not the intended tastes and aromas, but shows what happens when you keep even the most ordinary of Märzen well cellared. Will have to try a fresh one for comparison. Just a pity I didn’t cellar a few more bottles.

2.7 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 10/20
One-dimensional German Oktoberfestbier. Poured a classic lager gold colour with a frothy 1.5cm white head that dissipated fairly swiftly but left some lace. Rather flat looking. Marmalade and peaches in the nose. Medium bodied, with an oily mouthfeel that declares the alcohol (6% in this import to Australia). Sweet malt and pears in the mouth, a little warming alcohol in the finish. In fact, the alcohol is a little intrusive, swamping any other flavours in there. Disappointing example of the style. 3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
Fairly light gold for the style. Almost amber, but not quite. Large white head. The aroma is massive caramel and some apples. The taste is a pleasant blend of coffee, toffee and toast. Also a hint of pear. Smooth carbonation and slick mouthfeel. Not the most character for the style but, I like this one a lot.

2.4 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 10/20
Bottled. Yellowish golden colour, with about 2 cm white head. Aroma of sweet malt and a bit fruity. Flavor is sweet and malty and a little bitter in the aftertaste. Still pretty boring beer. (Was rated in December 2004, but I temporarily had lost the papers with results from this particular weekend)

2.7 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 10/20
(12 oz bottle: Hi Time Wine Cellars in Costa Mesa, CA) Yikes, this is a pretty bland Oktoberfest. In fact, I think this is as close to a premium lager as it is to an Oktoberfest. The flavor is moderately sweet, somewhat grainy and malty, and very lightly bitter. The prevailing aroma is corn, but in general, it doesn’t have a whole lot going on in the nose. Pretty light in body. Pale golden color, or maybe even just plain yellow, but either way, it’s pretty light in appearance. Pours a nice sized white head which settles to a thin layer. The large, dense patches of lace that are left on the glass is possibly the only positive thing to note with this beer.

2.6 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 11/20
Bottled. An amber golden coloured lager wiith no head. The aroma is a bit perfumed with creamy alcohol notes. The taste is OK. A bit of alcohol comes through together with a grassy buttery feel. It is full bodied but ultimately a dull beer.

2.5 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 10/20
Upon pouring this beer I was immediately surprised and disappointed. The body is pale yellow and the head is eggshell white. I wonder if there isn’t more than one of these beers because mine came in a green bottle and had a bit of skunk smell to it. Anyway, head settles quickly, leaves some lace. Aroma is malty with hints of hops but more typical of a Pilsner style lager than an Oktoberfest. Aroma does have some toasty, sweet notes if you look for them. Flavor dies on the palate. Tastes like carbonated, hop flavored water with a bit of alcohol thrown in. Finishes better though; with a nice hoppy bitterness. It’s not a terrible beer but I would neither buy it again nor recommend it to a friend.

3.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Bottled: Pale yellow coloured. Clear. Off white small head. Sweet, malty and dense fruity aroma. Flavour is light hopped. Crisp and easy to drink. Ends on a vague bitter note.

3.1 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
Medium brown color, light white head, but really no aroma to speak of. Taste is crisp, with hints of possibly mint. Nothing spectacular, I would rate this in the middle of the Octoberfest road.

3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Golden amber color with a decent white head. Malt aroma is mild, no hops as expected.
Sweet malt flavor is good but lacks intensity. Finish is lacking. Overall this is an average Oktoberfest.
