COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
The Munich Beer Festival, or Oktoberfest, is an event of superlatives - it’s the largest popular festival in the world, staging in the beer metropolis of Munich. Millions of visitors from all over the world flock along every year to enjoy its very special atmosphere. For this occasion, Hofbräu brews a rich, full-bodied beer which goes down ideally with traditional Bavarian cuisine. With its deliciously bitter taste and alcoholic content of 6.3% volume, Hofbräu Oktoberfestbier is as special as the Beer Festival itself.

(Rating #5994)

Poured from a super chilled 11.2 ounce bottle into a dimpled mug; lightly aromatic; a golden yellow clarity; first gulp has an ever so slight skunkiness, which does not deter further gulping; nor should it as this bier has a terrific smoothed hop first and a malty second to my taste receptors. Nice. Have a pretzel.

Surprised to see this on tap in The Crown Inn, Oakengates on 19th Nov 2014. This renowned cask ale pub does not normally have guest kegs on. Anyway I availed myself with a half as a reminder of my 8 O’fest trips to Munich I have had over the years: happy days. Couldn’t afford a litre and I was on a ticking mission and I thought I had already rated this. Poured clear golden, the white head hanging around for a while. The nose was malty, bready and slightly fruity: not as I thought I remembered (sweet molasses mostly in my mind). The taste was also malt led, but the beer was not as sweet as the aroma suggested or how I remember: bitter finish. Good actually, must get my memory to recall stuff better and what beers I have actually rated or not.

i will attempt to independently give the same observations about this beer as the other 72 of you, just so my opinion on the beer’s merit has some credibility: rich, dark gold colour. nice decocted malt smell. flavour is nutty/toffee, dried out at the finish by alcohol instead of bitterness. pretty low intensity but good quality straightforward vienna/munich malt character.

Aromas of bready malt, cereal and biscuits with some herbal aromas from the hops. The body is rich, full and a little sweet, but not overbearing. Loads of melanoidins i think. Goes down easy with a slight bitter and dry finish. Quite good, but i’d like it a little lighter maybe. It’s a tad too strong with too little flavor to balance out the alcohol content in my opinion. Still a decent beer though.

Aroma: lightly toasted barley malt, grass & floral hops Mouthfeel: light and crisp with a pleasant mostly dry finish. Flavor: bready malt, a bit of vanilla, some mild grass & floral hops. Overall: not outstanding but nicely dine and enjoyable.

500ml bottle. Pours a clear pale golden hue with a one finger white head. Malt heavy aromas with honey, light grassy notes, and a faint smell that reminds me of squash. Sweet, with grassy/straw-like malt notes, caramel, honey, and very light hopping that leads into light metallic notes, and woody/dusty malt notes with a little bit of a mineral flavour in the finish. The flavour profile is good, but this is most definitely too sweet. I’m not a huge fan of the style to begin with though. Half the bottle is more than enough for me.
