Tasted to me a lot like a pale lager. I did appreciate the slight skunkiness, which I believe was intentional.

UPDATED: FEB 8, 2014 When you drink Hopfbrau Original, it?s easy to see why Germans refer to beer as liquid bread. It has a slightly sweet light flavor, not over powering at all, and a good trace of yeast. It?s a fine example of a classic German lager, and easy to drink for non beer drinkers. However, if you want to get a little more for your money, I would suggest Kiran Ichiban instead. It?s very similar, but a little more satisfying.

500 mL bottle at a tasting on January 13. The pour is a crystal clear gold with a decent white head. It fades down quickly and the lacing has a decent spottiness to it. The aroma is malty, with a little bit of a floral note. It’s not overly complex, but it doesn’t have to be. It covers what is to be expected nicely. The flavor is also decent. There is light hoppiness to it, with a little bit of fruit, but it’s not as complex as the nose. The mouth feel is quite a bit thin, with little carbonation, but it lingers beautfully

Bottle from Bert’s Pours a crystal clear deep golden color with a smallish white head that dissipates rather quickly. Huge skunky aromas as soon as I pop the cap and pour into the glass. Luckily those dissipate rather quickly revealing a pleasant bready decocted pilsner malt aroma with a hint of floral earthy hop. The flavor is rich melanoid and pilsner malt with just enough earthy hop flavor to provide some balance. Medium body with a moderate level of carbonation and a slick almost sweet mouthfeel. Decent Helles, I’ve have had better, but I could drink this.
