Draft at The Porter. Murky brown color, bright tan head, solid lacing. Aroma of candied port wine. Taste is vinous brandy, vanilla, boozy plums. Delicious.

Tap at The Birch listed as "Hofstettner Sour Barley Wine 2011" at 8.3% abv. Pours a flat, clear, deep red tea. Nose is Twizzlers, red candies, red apple. Taste is harsher: some bile character, abrasiveness, paper, acid, moving to citric lemon tea. Eh. Dupont Calvados barrels show up on a Google search, I assume that is what this is.

Aged in DuPont Calvados barrels. Hazy red brown beer. Small off white head. Malty nose with a trace of apple. Softish semi dry palate. Sweetish malt tempered by a little aniseed. Trace of wood leads to sweet toffee and a little tangy apple. Nicely joined up. Tasty but not shouty.

Bottle 33 cl, trade. Pours deep mahogany amber with small beige head leaving some lace. Aroma is very fruity malty raisins fidges. Flavor similar to aroma, very sweet pungent and bitter. Finishes fruity bitter.

Bottle: Pours a clear bronze copper with a spotty-lacing off-white head. Has a lightly sweet caramel malty nose with some vinous fruity notes. Starts with average fullness and light carbonation with a mild sweetness and unique tart fruity and oak complexity before a fairly smooth finish. Doesn’t quite have the body to match the barrel character, but a tasty brew nonetheless.

Aroma of caramel, some dark fruits and a hint of brown sugar. Pours thick and ugly brown with small lacing. Tastes nice and yummy. Malts, fruits and a nice brown sugar ending. Great barleywine.

Pours a murky brownish color with very minimal head formation. Smells heavily of booze and the calvados barrels it was aged in. A bit of green apple, too. Some sweet caramel, toffee, and butterscotch are also there, maybe some vanilla. Sort of a bland flavor, all things considered. Bread and toffee malt with a hint of vanilla. Really not much of the booze that was present on the nose. A hint of oak and calvados toward the back end. Sort of thin for a barleywine with low carbonation.

Pours a clear brown with a thin off-white ring.
Sugary, raisin aroma.
The flavor has a large amount of sweetness, some dark fruit, the Calvados is in there too. No hops.
A bit different, but could probably use a bit of cellar.

11.2 ounce twist-off bottle - $4.99 at Hop City in Atlanta, Georgia. Brewed in Year/Batch No: 2010 03.
Appearance: Pours a well-clouded, murky brown body with a half-finger of shimmering, beige foam.
Smell: Raisins and moist dates stirred up with a hefty shot of calvados and a generous pour of sugary syrup with lesser notes fire-charred caramel and toasted malts.
Taste: Sweet, sugary taste of crème brûlée burnt sugar tops with deeply toasted, nearingly roasted malts and a big swig of raisin-flavored schnapps (99 Raisins), which quickly transitions to the twangy calvados as the alcohol heat begins to singe and scald the tongue a bit. Leathery earthiness with a dash of soil for an unclean back half. Modestly tannic used wood barrel character. Finishes still a bit sweet and warm with a lingering alcohol presence and enduring albeit mild tannins.
Mouthfeel: Medium-plus body. Medium carbonation.
Overall: I didn’t find it to be great, but I did find it to be very OK.
