From cask at Burton-Upon-Trent beer festival. Very dark with minimal head. Lovely chocolate aroma, but alas far too bitter and dry on the palate. Didn’t enjoy this one very much beyond its aroma.

500ml bottle from Ales by Mail. Poured an opaque brown with a lasting & creamy two finger light tan head. Liquorice, dark fruits, dark choccy & roasted malts with delicate coffee touches. Coffee, roasted malts, hints of dark fruit & liquorice, some ash & a light saltiness. Medium-ish body, subtly carbonated but otherwise smooth on the palate finishing with a lingering dry malty, slightly ashy bitterness. Such a solid stout.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 BlackHaddock (2432) - Shropshire, ENGLAND - APR 17, 2012
Oct 2010: Bottle conditioned, pint, poured into a ’Batemans’ branded UK pint sleeve.
Jet black with only a hint of red when held to a strong light, foam blanket of tan coloured bubbles sat on top. The head stayed for the whole tasting. This beer is unfiltered (suitable for veggies).
Real malty nose, dry and unsweetened.
Both malted barley and wheat is used in the brew, but the roasted combination blends into one slightly bitter taste. The mouthfeel is dry and deep, without any richness or creaminess.
All in all a fine example of an English Stout.

Bottle from Beers of Europe. Dark brown pour with a tan head, soon disappears like my beloved West Ham’s title dreams. Nose of coffee, chocolate, caramel and roasted malts. Nice aroma. Dark chocolate, coffee and licorice flavours. Light, bitter bite. Dry roast bitter finish. Not bad.
