Burnished copper, still, bright, oily, with no head - just a couple of airy bubbles that pop and disappear. Gorgeous barley-sweet and tobacco aroma from afar, on closer inspection there is caramel, toasty toffee, raisins, port and alcohol. Lovely start. Sweet and luscious in the mouth, toasty background, strongly bitter through the back and then an alcohol glow builds and dies away into a roasty toffee astringency. One of the longer-lasting tannic finishes that I’ve every experienced. A complex beer, not sessional but perfect for a special occasion or when everyone else is on the red wine. scotty (764), Scotland Jul 15, 2007 A lovley burnt gold colour, thin beige head thats lasting well. There’s a good bead of bubbles rising in the centre of the glass. The nos e is rich and powerful, lots of crystal malt and fruit. Palate is big and chewy, packed with malt, spice and also has a bit of citrus acidity. These all mingle and linger for ages, keeping the tastebuds quite happy, a well balanced beer for the strength, not overly complex or sweet. It wasn’ till I’d finished this that I noticed that it was BBE 29 Sept 2006, I’d only bought it a couple of months ago, but it has certainly lasted well. bhensonb (3222), Woodland, California, USA Apr 8, 2007 Bottle. Best before 21APR08. Aroma of ripe stone fruits, sultanas, malt, and a bit of alcohol. Translucent ruby orange color with virtually no head. Starts with fruity malt. Arguably medium mouthfeel. A little woody. Very light belgian candy aspects. A bit vinous, and the hop isn’t all that bitter. The finish is very dry, and the mouth is left puckerish. It seems to change a bit with each sip. Suspect it might go quite plummy with a few more years. Spectacular.
