Bottle. Pours clear light amber with noticeable carbonation. Little discernible hop aroma, more of hedgerow and slight sweetness. Taste typical of British bitters with added strange back-of-the-tongue sweetness that borders on the medicinal. Not unpleasant but in larger amounts (toward the end of the pint) started to get overpowering. Not my fave from Hog’s Back.

500ml bottle: BBD Mar 2013, poured into a UK pint sleeve at home on 2 Apr 2013, so two days out of date! Lovely looking beer for 30 seconds: bright amber/reddy brown/light mahogany body with a good but fast fading head. It then doesn’t look so great, just a collar and wisp sits on the fine body. Fruity malt loaf sort of aroma with a taste to match: there is a drying bitterness towards the end of each sip but this is mostly a malt based fairly sweet beer and to my liking. The body is almost rich in its depth and for a 4%ABV beer is impressive, a well made beer for sure.

Bottle from Oddbins. Colour is chestnut brown, clear, white head and very carbonated. Nose is sugary and citrousy like the smell of R. Whites lemonade, then some barley boiled sweet. Taste is caramel, lemon, boiled sweet sugar, grainy, husky. There’s a million filtered brown bitters like this in England.

500ml bottle. pours a dark amber with small white/cream coloured head. aroma is of malts and hops - smells like a good bitter. taste is a tad disappointing. tasted slightly skunky with an oily feel. still hoppy and bitter nonetheless.

Bottle at home - 31/12/12. Pours dark golden amber with a thin off white head that soon clears to the edge. Nose is light fruits, caramel, background hops. Tastes of caramel malt, fruits, light hops, touch of apples, a little biscuit. Medium bodied, soft carbonation, some bitterness in the finish. Assumes the classic ’W’ rating - "whelmed" ! Drinkable but dull.

Bottle. Pours a crystal clear dark tea coloured beer with a few bubbles in the body of the beer, but a head which disappears flat. Nose is incredibly sweet malt with a little hint of chocolate. Taste is quite full bitter, with a slight chocolate hint and some grassy hoppiness. Finish is refreshing with some very slight fruitiness. Solid.

4.0% bottle from Coppers in Newcastle. Copper coloured with quite high carbonation. It has a sweet malty and burnt toffee flavour, notes of currants and a red fruity finish.
