(bottle) Dark brown colour with a ruby shine and a beige and short foamy head. Moderately roasty malty aroma with notes of chocolate, caramel, liquorice-spice and a whiff of dried fruits. Roasty bitter flavour, medium bodied with a modest carbonation. Hearty roasty malty base with hints of molasses, caramel and dark chocolate, accompanied by subtle fruity notes towards the moderately dry and bitter hoppy and roasty finish. Very tasty indeed. 04.VI.07 & 11.III.12

Bottled. A dark brown beer with a purple hue and a small tan coloured head. The aroma has notes of plums and sweet caramel together with a little licquorice. The taste has more dark fruits together with a little chocolate malt and a feel of oil or petrol. A nice tasty fruity, quite full-bodied beer

A Mes rate: cask at Baker St. ’Sporks.
Thick tan head settled to nothing in about a minute and refuses to come back no matter how much I aggitate it. Fantastic colour though. Almost opaque rich dark amber. Slight off smelling sourness in the aroma spoils the really good earthy malt underneath. Flavour wise, this is lovely stuff. Drinks like a lightish barley wine. Good citric notes, chunky earthy malt with a pronounced sweetness and a glorious tangy feel, almost an old ale like sourness. If you hold it in the mouth it’s almost watery citrus but it’s all about the finish. Awesome sweet and sour blend. Loads of tangy fruit, chewy sweet alcohol and a really pleasing barley wine type character. Late hops but no bitterness round it off really well. Damn good stuff and certainly the best I have had from Hogs Back.

A very dark beer with a rich biscuit malt body along with smokey toffee notes - one for bonfire night perhaps. There is also a slightly vinous character. This is a little thin in the mouthfeel but still pleasant.

Gravity cask at Wandsworth Halloween Beer Festival, 2010. Pours dark brown, semi-clear, with a light head. Dark, lightly tart fruits, including plum and cherry, and malts in the nose. Fairly sweet, with more fruits such as plum and dark cherry and lightly toasted malts. Medium bodied with soft carbonation and a vinous texture. Finishes sweet, a tad tart, with light roast and mild brown sugar. Overall pretty good.

One-third pint ale dispensed on gravity at GBBF 09. Nice and clean, devil-black body. Smell of dark fruits and mild roasted malts. Jam-like flavour with fruitcakes and prunes supported by sweet, black malts. Well rounded aftertaste with rather low impact of alcohol on the palate (Earls Court, 07.08.2009).

Bottled, nice work by mowbeer lugging this back for pivni rozmanitost in Prague. Reddish brown with a thin, frothy head; aroma of rusty tea and stewed red berries; some molasses and rye and a long, lightly bitter finish. Good example of a winter warmer

Bottle. Deep brown colour. Aroma is quite medicinal, with light roasty notes, caramel, earthy malt. Palate is sweet and then bitter, with alcohol notcied. Roasted malt, caramel. Slightly metallic.
