3fourths (7976) - Boulder, Colorado, USA - MAY 4, 2013
UPDATED: JUL 21, 2013 cask. Mother Fuggles version. cloudy straw gold body with a thick, fine-bubbled white head. heavily yeasty nose with strong vitamin B and sulfur notes; burnt match sticks even come to mind, and the yeast mutes the otherwise nice mango and lemon pith and rind hop notes, which arenít what I expect from Fuggles but the hop aromatics are enjoyable nonetheless. flavor-wise the problems continue as the malt seems under-fermented and wort-like and the hop bitterness is strongly out of balance. yeast isnít as dominant as the nose, allowing the malt and hops more room to play, but it is still very vitamin B-like (Jeff would looooove this one) and sulfuric and thatís hard for me to get past. there is a small hint of English ale yeasty mustiness but I donít get the spicy, earthy character of Fuggles. instead thereís a lot of astringent citrus rind and pith (which was also very evident in the Lake Lightning simcoe dry-hopped version) and with the malt being somewhat flabby itís just too out of balance to make up for the overt yeastiness. so, medium-light body, medium-low sweetness, light to moderate hop astringency, smooth malt texture but flabby support (a lot of chewiness and the carbonation gives it no vibrancy or uplift to make up). sadly I could not finish half of the glass. Iíve had yeasty firkins from Hogshead before, itís only been an occasional thing, so hopefully the next one from this batch will be in better shape.

Scopey (6661) - Croydon, Greater London, ENGLAND - AUG 12, 2014
Cask gravity at GBVF 2014. It pours clear golden amber with minimal head. The nose is soft, fruity, tangerine, apricot, peachy, grain and marmalade. The taste is bitter-sweet, bitter, grapefruit, astringency, straw, pine, oily, peachy and apricot with a lingering bitter finish. Medium body and fine carbonation and oily mouth-feel. Decent.

Pour on cask at the brewery, mother fuggles, golden pour with white head, aroma brought notes of toast, caramel, and rich toffee into some slight grass, spice and lots of yeast in there, touch of herbal, slight lemon zest notes, finishing with hints of more caramel, toffee, and toasted malts.

Cask at Hogshead - medium gold, frothy cask head - lovelh dry earthy malt nose - whiskey, minerals, mushroom, with sweeter notes of honey and orange marmalade - flavor is very dry - toasty malt, light buttered bread, a dry mineral twang and a lingering bitterness - rather simple for this brewer, but still solid.

On cask at Hogshead poured a clear golden amber with a small lasting creamy white head. Aroma of toasted malt, carmel, graininess and light earthiness. Palate was light bodied and smooth. Flavors of toated malt, carmel, graininess and light earthiness with a smooth lingering toasted malt finish.

Cask @ Hogshead. Pours a touch hazy, slightly dark orange appearance witha foamy cream colored head. Earthy, light citrusy, fairly herbal, chewy bready/yeasty aroma. Moderately bitter, chewy herbal, a touch woody, light citrusy, yeasty flavor. Not my favorite here but easy to drink. Probably could pound a bunch of these.
