Chalk board at the brewery said 9.8%. Traditional English style barley wine, but what else would you expect from these guys? Dark amber with some magenta color, zero head or lacing. Toffee and earthy caramel malts. Slightly thin palate. Nose is a little hot, but not too apparent in taste. Would love to age this, but great now.

Pours syrupy unclear murky amber with a whitish head. Aroma brings sweet malts, not resin but more with birch earthiness. Flavor bring similar notes, birch, sweet and earthy malts, and smooth bitterness.

On tap at the brewery, 2012 version. Deep reddish brown with a dissipating tan head, minimal lacing. Aroma of fruity esters, caramel, sweet malts, light bitter hops, vanilla, toffee and dark fruits. Similar flavor with a pretty full body. An excellent English-style barley wine. A nice sipper.

Snifter at Hogshead. Rich and huge nose of caramel, vanilla, and booze. Very full and rich, lots of toffee and caramel. Finishes clean and sweet. I wish they would bottle so I could see how it would age.

Cask on tap at Hogshead. Pours a black color with white head. Caramel, toffee, alcohol. A little too much alcohol for me.

On cask @ Hogshead. Pours mahogany in color with a khaki head. Nose is big on the fruit. Tart citrus, some gooseberry, caramel, and toffee. Melon notes, a touch of toast, and some dark fruits. Flavors of melon, grapefruit, and gooseberry. Really quite fruity. Caramel, toffee, and some toasted malt sweetness.

(Cask) clear deep copper, soapy/oily bubbles. Nose of caramel, banana, alcohol, raisin. Taste of toasty caramel, alcohol, hops are perhaps a little too estery for this beer but it’s still nice. Palate linger of caramel, perhaps a little bitter which is better than sweet.
