3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 TAR (2346) - Lafayette, Colorado, USA - DEC 31, 2012
Draught at Höhn in Autumn 2011 and 2012: Orangish with yellow tint. Creamy, sustained white halo of foam. Clean, airy, toasty, vivid malt aromas with mild pepper, biscuits, and sour fruit yeastiness. Soft carbonation. Firm body. Opens with a robust crackle of toasty Munich and lightly honeyed biscuits along with a mouthful of minerals and a tickle of alcohol. Haylike malt joins perceptible melanoidin character which links up with an attractively hefty and nutty Munich signature. Nice soft florals accompany the composed hop bitterness. Finishes semi-dry with a yeast-bolstered body capped by a tardy expression of fresh bready weightiness and sweetish honeyed biscuit flavors. The most recent batch I tried is fruitier than I recall, and thus is not as quaffable as the cleaner version I enjoyed in 2011. A very straightforward example, but it doesn’t really do anything wrong.
2.9 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20 pivnizub (8000) - Bochum, Porúří, GERMANY - NOV 8, 2012
On tap: Deep golden, hazy, stable creamy off-white head, grassy-hoppy nose with slight malty traces; light to medium bodied, sweet-bitter flavour; traces of vegetables in the drier bitter-sweet finish. Quite weak by franconian standards…
3.5 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 Tim Webb (198) - Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, ENGLAND - SEP 5, 2012
On draught at the brewery tap. A difficult beer to rate. In some ways ordinary, in others a classic. Earthy, real-aley, hopping just right, good solid malt base and a fine natural-herbal character. But nothing to make you get up and dance. The Franconian beer dilemma in a single glass.
3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 blipp (4784) - Newark, New Jersey, USA - SEP 4, 2012
Draft. Pours orange with a white head. Malty, light toasted bread, not quite wheaty, but almost. Light spicy and grassy hops, a touch of sweetness, and a quick clean finish. Pretty good.
3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 Theydon_Bois (2957) - The ’Sham, Surrey, ENGLAND - AUG 12, 2012
On tap at the hotel Gasthof-Hohn, Memmlesdorf - 28/04/12.
Slightly hazy amber-brown in colour.
Malts and yeast are the mainstay of the nose allied to a little earthy veg smell.
Flavour is again malt, some fruits come through also, not citrus maybe peachy/apples - but fairly background in this respect.
Light bitterness in the mouth and finishes fairly dry.
Would revisit this one.
3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20 downender (5191) - Bristol, Gloucestershire, ENGLAND - AUG 11, 2012
On tap in Memmelsdorf, 18/07/2012. Slightly hazy gold in colour and appearance, with a billowy, off-white head. Stone fruit aroma with some sweetness and a touch of grassy hop. Sweetish, malt flavour with some more fruit and gently bitter finish. Good.
3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 EithCubes (4198) - New Jersey, USA - JUN 11, 2012
Tap at Höhn. Slightly hazy orange body with a rocky cream head. Sweet malty nose, light citrus and yeast. Very inviting. Rustic, sweet then dry taste, has some flavor in common with a grainy Maibock. Citrus is pretty mild but they’re getting a nice pith/rind sort of bitterness out of the noble hops. Medium-full body, yummy. Now this is a Landbier!
3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 Ernest (5627) - Boulder, Colorado, USA - DEC 25, 2011
Rated at Hohn Nov 2011.
Head is mostly lasting.
Body is light amber.
Aroma is moderately malty (toasted grain, bread), lightly hoppy (herbs), lightly yeasty (dough), with light notes of earth, honey, minerals, orange peel.
Flavor is moderately sweet, lightly acidic, lightly bitter.
Finish is lightly sweet, lightly acidic, lightly to moderately bitter.
Medium body, velvety/watery texture, lively/soft carbonation.
Somewhat mild aroma, but pleasant and detailed. Beautiful quaffing balance and very clean. A truly lovely beer, but the bock was the star of the show so I didn’t spend quite as much time with this one.

3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 Koelschtrinker (8485) - Köln (Cologne), GERMANY - MAY 21, 2011
Herber Hopfenantrunk, markant. 10/10/10/10//10
