Commercial Description:

English: The inspiration for this beer comes from the Danish "skibsøl", a smoked style from the 15th century. The style was created when the Danish navy needed a beer with a long storage life. It was also necessary for the sailors to be able to do their job, so the beer had a low alcohol volume. Because a long storage life was needed, smoked malts was used and the powerful flavour of rope and smoked tar does not appeal to many today which caused this special beer style to become almost extinct. It is a dry, fresh beer brewed with pilsner-, colour- and smoked malts with an underlying note of hops. Holbæk Havnebryg is black as the night and has a light flavour of liquorice with a subtle whiff of smoked malt. It is a beer that goes well with strong meat dishes as well as being a nice drink to put out your thirst.

An unclear opaque brown beer with a huge lazing orange-brown head. The aroma is of smoke and burnt plastic on a sweet rotten meat back ground, but in a good way. The flavor has light notes of burnt plastic and smoke on a slightly acidic roasted malty back ground, but also with a boring chocolate note. The end has a light note of vegetables in the dry and bitter end. If I want a Skibsøl, I rather want the one from Refsvindinge - but I don’t know which is closest style wise.

Partyfass. Hazy dark brown coloured with a rather large head. Kinda artificial with notes of rubber, metal and cardboard. Thin and uninteresting.

(On tap) Hazy dark brown with a dense, handsome, beige head. Vague aroma of roasted malt. Fairly light body with accents of hard roasted malts - but not really burned. A very discreet note of smoke appears rather late. Dry lightly bitter finish with a vague underlying tartness throughout. 091006

Draught at No. 5. Dark brown with a large light brown head, mostly diminishing, some lacings. Aroma moderate malty (caramel, smoke) and hoppy. Flavor moderate sweet, but more sour/acidic/bitter - not harmonic. Light/medium body, almost flat.
