COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Cask: Occasional. First brewed July 2006.
Herald hops and Maris Otter malt combine to give this bronze gold brew a light malty scent with a distinctive hop character leading to a clean and refreshing finish. Well worth going the extra mile for!
Cradley Heath was famous for chain making. It was a harsh living - both men and women worked at the hundreds of forges which peppered the area for pay that, even by the standards of the time, was pitifully low.
Beer played a great part in the lives of both male and female chain workers as a relatively inexpensive means of cooling down and topping up fluid levels: Reports at the time suggested that drinking 24 pints a day was not unusual! Indeed, beer was so important to the workers that each factory had a boy whose only job was to run out and fetch pints for the men. The fact that workers were so poor means that it is not surprising that the beer that was served was the cheapest available: known as Burton Returns it was largely beer that had been returned to the brewery as undrinkable by more fastidious customers... and as a result the boys were known as Burton Runners.

tombyars (1102) - Saltcoats, SCOTLAND - JAN 12, 2012
Tasted this at the Esquire House, Glasgow (JDW) in April 2010. Cask, handpump dispense. Crystal clear straw in colour with a thin white head. Thin malt in the short aroma with a touch of green apple. Thin insipid resiny mouthfeel and poor lacing. Pale malts give a maltloaf base with faint citric grapefruit notes. Bitter metallic hop resins kick in with strong astringency. Finish is very dry with woody briar notes. A poor session bitter, better Bitters in the extensive Holdens portfolio.

Live rate. Bottle from Booth’s, Ilkley. Pours pale and lagery with no visible carbonation and a slim white skim. Metallic, faintly grassy aroma with pleasing hints of apple turnover as it warns. Pleasantly buttery Black Countryness with licks of pine, straw, sugared puff pastry and corn. A bit throwaway and metallic, but it’s alright.

12th April 2010. Clear gold beer. Very light carbonation. Semi dry palate. Not too much malt, just enough to provide a base for some nice hops that cut through. Orange and grapefruit and a dash of spcice. Not a hop bomb but the hops cut through well here.

A Mes rate. Cask at Baker Street ’Sporks.
Clean gold with a faint off white filmy head.Slightly phenolic, virtually no hop presence at all and far too much biscuity malt. Nothing particularlywrong with it, but there is nothing particularlyright about it too. Oh, some bitterness in the finish. There are actually some hops in here... I think.
