COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Caution!! Taste buds and motor-vehicle drivers beware!! This Belgian style "Abbey Ale" is BIG; big on flavour, big on alcohol and big on fun. The Belgian monks didn’t muck around when they created this beer style - double the malt, double the hops, double the alcohol and logically called it "Dubbel". The Holgate Double Trouble drinks like a fine cognac or brandy - intense raisin, toffee and rum flavours, to be sipped, savoured and enjoyed together with a cheese platter or sticky-date pudding.

Brown murky pour with fizzy head. Nose is malty with spice coming to the fore as it warms. Alcohol is prevalent and is washed down with some boggy malt. Warming and finish is cloying. Never really comes close to a dubbel. Reminds me of the Mad Abbot Abbey Ale, but at least this is drinkable. Nice but a bit bog standard and never really hits it’s stride.

Bottle 330ml.
Clear medium red amber color with a small, frothy - fizzy, fair lacing, mostly diminishing, off-white head. Aroma is moderate to heavy malty, caramel, vintage malt, oxidide, dark berry, prune, light alcohol. Flavor is moderate to heavy sweet and light to moderate bitter with a average to long duration, dark berry sweet. Body is medium, texture is oily, carbonation is soft. [20100109]

UPDATED: AUG 23, 2011 Bottle. Reddish brown. Tiny "rim and island" head. Cherry and prune aroma. Some vanilla, chocolate and alcohol. Fairly sweet with carbonation and some bitter and sour notes to balance. [3.1]

Bottle. Clear reddish brown. Off-white head completely gone in a few seconds. Aroma has berries and caramel, some chocolate and spices. Taste is better with some doughy yeast under caramel, dried fruit and spices. Drying finish is a little spicy. Pretty respectable.

Bottle. This is a strong tasty beer. Aroma has cherries and alcohol. Sweet flavour, with light balancing bitterness. Syrupy and full-bodied in the palate. Dark red colour, with a thin fizzy head.

Copper pour with small dissipating head. Aroma shows cinnamon, caramel, some plums, vanilla, dark chocolate and figs. Very rich, very appetising. Flavour contains masses of dark sugar and treacle, almost overwhelming in its sweetness. A fair bit of alcohol is also noticeable. No where near enough carbonation is present to cut through the sweetness.

Pours clear red/brown with a non existent head. Nose is very expressive with dark fruit notes and significant spice, surely some extra fermentables in there, reminds me of the christmas ale funnily enough. Palate has low/medium carbonation again with the rich caramel malt, dark fruit (raisins, prunes) & spice notes. Palate translates well. Finishes with lingering sweetness & spice. Abv pops up a touch but none moreso than the style requires. Would have liked it to be bottle conditioned but nonetheless a really good attempt at a belgian dark.

Bottle. This beer pours a dark coppery colour with very little head, just a smattering of bubbles which quickly turn into a thin ring around the top. Nose is fairly light with traces of currants, coffee and toffee. Flavour is kind of similar, although not so light, with a bit more dark fruit, like raisins, as well as butter, rum and brown sugar. A very nice tasting beer, just a little bit lacking in the appearance department.

Bottle at Holgate Brewhouse, Woodend. Pours ruby with a small beige head that lingered nicely. Aroma and flavour of spice, banana, yeast, brown sugar and stewed dark fruits. Great carbonation and bitterness. It’s really well balanced and an impressive dubbel true to the style.

The entire Holgate range has poured with almost no head. This Dubbel pours a beautiful deep red with aromas of toffee and alcohol. A toffee flavour with a sweet finish. Enjoyable brew. The best I have tasted in the Holgate range. Drinks better than I thought considering its alcohol volume.
