COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Formerly known as Old Pale Ale / Bitter Pale Ale

This traditional ale is steeped in the history of 19th century England. Its characteristic red-copper hue contradicts its name and is due to colour and is due to colour comparisons with the popular brown ales of the time. Like the original Pale Ales this Holgate version is characterised by strong hop aroma and high hop bitterness, balanced by a full malt flavour. Produced using a blend of special roast and crystal malts, the result is a full creamy texture and light nutty, roast flavour. Old Pale Ale is naturally carbonated in the traditional way, non-filtered and non-pasteurised. Drink fresh and enjoy!

Bottle. Copper coloured with a slight, off-white head. Caramel, red fruits, bready malts and a touch of grassy hop in the finish. Enjoyable, easy drinking.

such low ratings.. why? this is a cracking ESB- toffee malt aromas with a layered palate of citrus, pine and butter-toffee. a complex session ale- excellent value

Bottle from Mane Liquor. Quite an easy going, approachable ESB. Loads of floral hops and grass on the nose. Taste shows a more malt driven beer than lead to believe. Quite sticky and resinous. Heavy caramel. Hop bitterness on the finish. Not too shabby

330ml bottle. Pours a handsome copper amber, with a medium off-white head, which lasts well and leaves good lacing. The aroma has fruitcake and toffee notes, as well as some light floral hops. Floral hops up front are backed by sweeter candied fruit. Fruitcake, biscuit and toffee malt notes lend some weight to the mid-palate, with some resurgent floral and faint citrus hops in the finish. This is a convincing take on the sweeter style of bitter. The flavours are spot on, and my only real issue is that it is perhaps a touch over-carbonated for a beer of this style.

On tap at the brewpub. Seved a copper color with a nice head that slowly fades to lacing. Aroma of Roasted malt, caramel, with some citrua and grain in the background. Taste of roasted malt, caramel sweetness with some citrus and grain in the background. Nice bitterness and a quite dry finish. Medium body, smooth and somewhat creamy and very nicely balanced. Very enjoyable ESB. Worth checking out.

Sweet Malt aroma, lacks pronounced hop aroma. Burnt orange, slight cloudiness with soapy suds lacing. Bitter fuit hop balance, finishes with too bitter a palate.

330ml bottle pours a pale amber color with a finger of white head that leaves some decent lacing on the glass. Aroma is caramel and cereal grains with a touch of citrus. Taste is a caramel malty sweetness with a pleasant hoppy bitterness of grass and citrus. Light to medium body with nice carbonation. A nice representation of the style and recommended for a good tasting experience.

330ml brown bottle. Orangey-golden coloured with a creamy white cap. A bit of lacing. Nose has caramel malts, faint orangey citrus. In the mouth the beer has light grains, caramel sweetness, grassy and touches of toasted malt. Finishes with some modest bitterness, grass and straw in the aftertaste. Body is medium, nice fine bubbled carbonation. Overall, drinkable but fairly uninteresting.

Niksko (118) - Melbourne, AUSTRALIA - JUN 6, 2012
Bottle at rooftop bar. Pours a clear dark orange with very little head. Aroma is loads of passionfruit, citrus and some hoppy grass. The taste is more passionfruit and some peach on the attack, a citrus mid palate transitioning quickly to bitter finish with grassy hops and some hay flavours. The finish is rather long, and the hop bitterness fades to reveal a slight vegetal note. Pretty light bodied, but with a slightly syrupy mouth feel. Not much carbonation (could have used just a shade more). Pretty good effort.

Had on tap at the union at newtown. A very good version of an ESB. Nice grassy hop aroma and lingering hop bitterness. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
