Formerly known as Old Pale Ale / Bitter Pale Ale

This traditional ale is steeped in the history of 19th century England. Its characteristic red-copper hue contradicts its name and is due to colour and is due to colour comparisons with the popular brown ales of the time. Like the original Pale Ales this Holgate version is characterised by strong hop aroma and high hop bitterness, balanced by a full malt flavour. Produced using a blend of special roast and crystal malts, the result is a full creamy texture and light nutty, roast flavour. Old Pale Ale is naturally carbonated in the traditional way, non-filtered and non-pasteurised. Drink fresh and enjoy!

330ml brown bottle. Orangey-golden coloured with a creamy white cap. A bit of lacing. Nose has caramel malts, faint orangey citrus. In the mouth the beer has light grains, caramel sweetness, grassy and touches of toasted malt. Finishes with some modest bitterness, grass and straw in the aftertaste. Body is medium, nice fine bubbled carbonation. Overall, drinkable but fairly uninteresting.

On tap. Poured as unremarkable as it drank. No doubt better than a lager, but malt and hops where fairly balanced and surpressed so bit of a nothing beer. Drinkable though

On tap at Holgate tap takeover at the Durham, 23/4/2015. Pleasant ESB, more hop forward than malt. Enjoyable session beer.

Hazy brown pour, beige/tan head. Medium carbonation. Toffee aroma, earthy floral hop notes. Taste is surprisingly watery, with a bready backbone and some present bitterness but little flavour to match. Astringency that wasn't expected. Not my favourite even though I usually like Holgate beers

Bottle from Plonk (June 2014). Slightly hazy copper, off-white head, lots of caramel malt, slightly nutty, roasty, juicy tropical fruit hops, medium bitterness, medium sweetness, a very good ESB.

Bottle to tulip Lots of tropical fruit, grapefruit, and caramel aromatics there seems to be a overripe apple aroma in the background. Slightly cloudy reddish amber with a long lasting, very creamy off white head. Fruity and some late lasting bready hoppiness; the fruit washes away almost immediately. Kind of disappointing given the aroma.

Pours a nice amber colour with little head. Aroma is mostly of malt As well as taste. There is some hop bitterness but not much hop flavour. Pretty lacklustre ale.

Vibrant fruity aroma but sadly it was a little thin and fairly bland, not a beer for those who like a lot of flavour. Very sessionable though.
