COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
The Holgate Hopinator takes the original concept of an IPA to the extreme, with a higher gravity to balance an outrageous hopping schedule. Delivering rich and malty caramel flavours,a dense pine hop aroma and an edgy bitter hop finish

So wanted to like this but it’s a pretty poor effort at the style. Far too dark - deep bronze rather than orange. Little or no head. Sweet and sticky aroma of quince paste, figs, passionfruit and crystal malt. Poor bottle conditioning - flat and slick, rather than creamy. Far too heavy on the crystal malt. There is some pine/mint hop cut-through but it’s struggling to edge the malt aside. Found this cloying after a bit. (330ml bottle from Platinum Cellars. BB 3/2/10)

Quite dark in colour, more than I expected anyway. This was a pretty fresh bottle so it had plenty of piney, citrus hop aroma. I think the key to these beers is getting them as fresh as can be, ideally on tap. Good malt flavour there, but the hops are the star with some firm bitterness to back it all up.

Very rich, brown with red hues. caramel malts overdone and dominate. Leaves a rich fruit / plum note but a residual burnt feel to it also. No IPA, maybe more an American Amber?

From a 330ml bottle on 25/8/2010. The aroma is very fruity - plums and raisins with some spice. Starts out very sweet, with dark fruit and caramel flavours prevalent. Lives up to its name with oodles of lingering hops. A big beer, which is not particularly subtle, but has a fair bit of character. Enjoyable.

Sweet malt hop aroma with flowers. Clear red brown colour with great head and lacing. Sweet malt fruit hop flavour. Smooth palate.

330mL bottle. Pours a clear golden amber with a small but persistent white head that leaves some lacing. The aroma is composed of caramel and resinous, fruity hops in equal amounts. A little too sweet, decent bitterness with some fruity acidity. Soft carbonation, light-medium bodied, slightly sticky with a lingering bitter and slightly acidic finish.

Dark brown colour with minimal head. Strong aroma of toasted chocolate and malt. Bitter to the taste, almost to the point of being unpleasant (not quite). Bitter after taste and a warming sensation. Not my kind of beer so difficult for me to rate.

I wouldnt call this an IPA, let alone double IPA, much too dark and rich caramel malty. (double) amber ale I’d say. Never the less, pretty tasty. Rich caramelly malt backed up by sharp citrus hoppiness.
