The Holgate Hopinator takes the original concept of an IPA to the extreme, with a higher gravity to balance an outrageous hopping schedule. Delivering rich and malty caramel flavours,a dense pine hop aroma and an edgy bitter hop finish

330mL bottle. Pours a clear golden amber with a small but persistent white head that leaves some lacing. The aroma is composed of caramel and resinous, fruity hops in equal amounts. A little too sweet, decent bitterness with some fruity acidity. Soft carbonation, light-medium bodied, slightly sticky with a lingering bitter and slightly acidic finish.

Dark brown colour with minimal head. Strong aroma of toasted chocolate and malt. Bitter to the taste, almost to the point of being unpleasant (not quite). Bitter after taste and a warming sensation. Not my kind of beer so difficult for me to rate.

I wouldnt call this an IPA, let alone double IPA, much too dark and rich caramel malty. (double) amber ale Id say. Never the less, pretty tasty. Rich caramelly malt backed up by sharp citrus hoppiness.

A Mes rate. Bottle at Chris Os Kook Fest tasting.
Darkish amber with a good beige head. Generally hops and caramel and erm... Too malty and not hoppy enough. The hops are nice enough but theyre rather stifled. Chewy caramel finish. Errrrrrr, yeah, shoulda called it Maltinator.

28/12/2009, 330ml bottle from Highlandlad (slainte!). Dark amber, much darker than Id expect from an "IPA", but has a delicious looking creamy white head. As expected from the colour, there is with a strong malt presence on the nose: melanoidin toastiness and some toffee, with just a whiff of herb and spice from the hops... this follows in the mouth, where the toasty character really needs to toned back a fair deal to increase drinkability. It doesnt really know what it wants to be but it isnt badly made at all, and could be really good with a couple of tweaks (less dark specialty malt and more hop bitterness and flavour). Muddled.

Bottle at Chrisos Kook Tasting 09. Overly sweet IPA. Not enough hop. Bit of oxidation.

Bottle at chris_os "smash Kooks granny tasting". Alround rating: Quite a bit of caramalt, noteably sweet, grassy hop and orange peel, but its too sweet for me.

UPDATED: OCT 8, 2010 Bottle. Looks like black tea. Desultory head. Fruit and pine aroma. Toffee, bubblegum and raisin malt sweetness. Spruce hops and plenty of fairly dull bitterness. If there are lots of hops in here they are ill-used. [2.0]

Bottle. Copper. Small, fading beige head that leaves some lacing. Medium bead. Aroma of dried fruit, caramel, pine and a little citrus. Taste as above. A much<i/> better bottle, but still not much chop.
