Bottle. Black with red tints and a beige foam. Aromas are milk and dark chocolate with raisins. Lightly roasted with herbal notes. Flavours are rich and malty with dark chocolate and its bitterness. Fruity with dark berries. Dark syrup with some smokiness. Alcohol on the finish. The sparkle lets it down a touch but overall this is very decent.

Bottle. Very dark brown with a thick tan head. Burnt, bittersweet aroma. Very well roasted malt flavor, just a bit sweet, with dried dark fruits, cream, chocolate, coffee. Dry, roasted, slightly hoppy finish. A rather interesting beer, and a nice change from all the bitters I had tonight. Nice, rich beer.

500ml bottle from B+M. Reflective ruby with a slim beige lid. Invitingly rich, malty aroma with suggestions of prune, christmas cake and Curly Wurly. Fine, doppelbock-accented brew exuding muscovado and cocoa-sprinkled dried fruits; malt loaf, slight cough medicine and black cherry (Tunes). Pretty good.

Bottle shared at the tropical Croydon tasting at Paul’s. 01/07/2015. Reddy / caramel brown coloured pour with a loose light tan head. Aroma is farmyard, dirty, stale malts, malty, some alcohol. Flavour is composed of nutty malts, metallic notes, spicy rough bitterness. Some jammy fruits in the Irish. Palate is medium sweet, little papery. Bad.

Very dark with a tiny red glow and next to no head. It has a smooth texture with plenty of sweet winter fruits but some roasted malts are evident too, although not dominant.

Bottle @ Croydonia. Deep amber with a small head. Nose of cocoa crisp and old donuts. Sort of sweet and unresponsive. Taste is similar. Bread and cocoa. A touch nuttey. General knackered maltiness. Meh.

50cl bottle from Morrisons, Bracknell. A attractive deep reddish chestnut colour with a thick creamy beige head; the aroma has some raisins and demerara sugar, and also some damp earth; the mouthfeel is creamy with a complex blend of flavours - some bittersweet chocolate, some purple fruit, coffee and raw cane sugar, all balanced by a pleasant bitterness; and rounded off by a dry, warming, nutty finish. Rather good.

500ml Bottle: best before 20 Dec 2012, poured @ home into a UK pint sleeve on 15 Nov 2012. The beer was obtained from my local B&M Bargains Store. Nice deep, dark ruby red colour with a full uneven covering of tan foam on top. Brown sugar type malty molasses in the nose and taste: this is a malts first and foremost brew. Prunes, plums and mixed nuts vie for your attention in the flavours as the malts and hops go to work with each other. The body is moving towards rich and thick: the beer reminded me of those old winter warmers because it has that sort of Christmassy fireside taste and palate. Cheap to buy: well worth the cost and I’ll be getting some more in for December.
