Half litre bottle, poured into oversized Tripel Karmeliet tulip. A: Golden, clear, large head, moderate retention, lively looking. S: Saaz hop, lots of hay. T: Strong hints of rye and sour dough, gave way to a malty sweetness which gave it a good balance. M: Light body, moderate carbonation. O: A great example of a beer from a small Upper Franconian brewpub. So easy to throw down in large quantities with the monster sized Schnitzels they serve.

Fresh bottle at Cafe Abseits, in Bamberg Nov. 2012: Polished golden. Creamy, persistent, sticky white head. Light yogurty note accompanies DMS, wet hay, vinegar, stewed apple in the curiously dirty nose. Underlying golden raisin, toasted bread and marmalade. Soft carbonation, flimsy body. Sweetly malty with plenty of toasty Munich, though there is a peculiar marshmallow note and appley twang plaguing the sweet grain, which consequently renders the malt severely dull, lifeless, and flaccid. Sweet cooked corn and other vegetal DMS notes amplify the excessive sweetness and muddled nature. Fusel alcohol in there as well, along with a loathsome pearlike sweetness. Finishes fuzzily malty with wet paper paired with fleeting toast. Nauseating after one gulp. Rife with flaws.

Poured clear golden with a small white head. Aroma of caramel malt and light floral hops. Medium body, flavour as the aroma with a vanilla hint and some residual bitterness.

Bottle at Abseits, Bamberg 15/7/2012. Clear gold in colour with a slight white head. Clean, easy drinking, with a touch of maltiness and moderately bitter finish. Good.

(draught) pours a hazy golden colour with a very stable frothy white head. aroma of herbal hops and mushrooms, very rustic and buttery. flavour is quite grainy, with notes of herbal hops, straw and light pepper, again lots of barnyard and some butter, with a medium-bitter finish. medium-bodied with soft carbonation.

Tap in Abseits. Hazy pissy golden with a lacing, rocky bright white head. Great nose, citrus and some vanilla in with sunny malt and light grass, and caramel. Light bitterness, grainy and yeasty with some great pretzel and sourdough. Wooden tones, spicy hop notes, bright malt and lesser caramel. Light body. Juicy.

croc at the brewery. vibrant dry grass nose with pungent noble hops liveliness. nose and flavor of honey cracker malt is enjoyable. smooth and creamy with prickly hop acid and light apple juice flavor, but overall it’s delicious and genuine. the owner’s son trained under Ganstaller at Beck-Brau, and the result is one of the better vollbier’s in the area.
