3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 Silphium (2718) - East Lansing, USA - JUL 1, 2011
On tap at Cafe Cups, Homer, AK. Medium straw-orange body, thin off-white head. Bready nose with floral, piny, bitter hops. Bready body, toasty and somewhat tangy with flabby bitter, spicy, herbal hops. A mediocre beer at a great restaurant.

[Tap] Had on tap at a restaurant in Homer. Light amber in color with a small amount of head to it. Muddled hop aroma is grassy and a bit floral. Overall the nose is pretty weak for pale ale. Tastes of a mix of citrus, pine and grassy hops. Mild and astringent grainy notes throughout. The hop profile here was a bit messy. A sharp bitterness in the finish is unpleasant. Light in body. I wasn’t a big fan of this one.

Great pale ale! Hops and malt balanced well, with a nice hop finish. Served a little too cold to notice the aroma

On tap @ Duggan’s. Cloudy light amber with a very small head. Mellow aroma with light hints of bready malt and floral hops. Flavor is very mildly sweet with a balanced bitterness. Light body, crisp but with a butterscotch finish. Not bad, just nothing special and had a hard time smelling or tasting the NW hops.

Light sweet malts pair nicely with light floral hops. Some grassy notes in the finish. I got a kind of sugar cereal aroma from it (not unpleasant).

22-Jan-08 (Draft: Duggan’s Waterfront Pub in Homer, AK) Pretty much a standard American pale ale. Pale malt flavor is minimally sweet and is balanced by a moderately bitter, classic American hop flavor. Aromas are fairly light; not much hops, just some light maltiness. Light-medium in body, crisp and clean on the palate. Medium golden in color with moderate haze. Thin, off-white head settles to a sugar sprinkle film and thin ring. Nothing out of the ordinary here, but there’s nothing wrong with making a straight forward beer.

On tap, 7/2/8, at Lands End in Homer. Light orange with thin white head. Nice soft flavor. Easy to drink but kind of bland at the end.

The Homer Brewing company is one of my favorite local breweries. Almost every single beer it produces is excellent.

Eh. Grassy, decently hoppy aroma. No head, basic PA flavor. Nice palate though. Take the brewers other options.

Taken from the brewery in a growler 7/7/05: Orange with a yellow tinge and firm, rocky head. Soapy/malty aroma. Grassy and silky with a slippery palate. Too soapy.
