Thaichile (597), 10aFly, New Jersey, USA Aug 20, 2007 5oz. glass @ Sunset Grille. I have been wanting to check this out as I love the hot, so I was psyched to see it on the beer list here. Poured an almost clear, slightly golden tinged color. Nose is overwhelmingly honey, almost nauseatingly so. Flavor is the same, but thank goodness diminished honey tones. Unfortunately, there are some off flavors in there before the chili heat creep up on you and leave a very nice hot, but not over the top finish. I drank the glass to get to the finish, but I will probably not have this again. In defense of this, I do not know how long this bottle had been opened and how it may have deteriorated because of that.
heemer77 (3667), Savannah, Missouri, USA Sep 2, 2008 Ok, the bottle is the coolest thing here. Thanks for sharing, csbosox. The body is medium gold. The aroma was sweet honey with some chilis. There was also some gym sweat socks that have been soaked in nail polish remover. The taste was lightly sweet at first with a spicy finish. There were some hints of oxidation. Certainly a unique experience. vyvvy (1689), Hazelwood, Missouri, USA Aug 22, 2008 Pours crystal clear and golden. The aroma has some dry-ish honey with a bit of chili pepper. Overall the aroma is more on the honey side than spicy with lots of smoothness. Medium thin body that starts out a bit smooth and then ends harsh grainy and a bit abrasive. From some of the review I’d read I expected the taste to be far more spicy and brutal, but I have quite tolerance for spiciness, so not much phasing occurred, although there is apparent spice. The taste has definite chili peppers in the front, but not too harsh. There is also some honey and smoothness of mead to balance things off a bit. I had this on its own, but I suspect for spicy food lovers this would be a fine thing to have with some kicked up Indian or Mexican food. It is enjoyable, but doesn’t show any nuances as the chilis take away any of those trait. A fun mead, but quite one dimensional. If you just get one from this brewery, go with the herbal since it is a thing of beauty, this is merely a nice novelty. dchmela (702), Orlando, Florida, USA Aug 15, 2008 Has a glass of this at Redlight. I always thought this had to be interesting and I had to try it. Pours in the glass like a slightly thick chardonnay with a tinge of red. Floral, spicy intense chili pepper aroma that turned everyones head at the bar, mainly because it was so fragrant the whole bar could smell it. Body is slightly thin, but its hard to tell because the chili pepper are tearing your taste buds to shreds. Lots of spicy chili peppers with hints of honey trying to balance it out. Very interesting. TURDFERGUSON (1136), Carrboro, North Carolina, USA Aug 4, 2008 Bottle shared by acrdz at BCTC. Thanks Mike! Mike said he was trying to get rid of this and so I expected the worst, but damn, I liked this one. Nose had a very natural and sweet honey aroma with a bit of chiles mixed in there. Flavor, again, had a very fresh honey backbone, with some nice habanero chilies on top. I thought it was blended very well and didn’t find it overly hot or spicey. I’ll definitely be going "against the grain" on this one. trevor211 (87), Seattle, Washington, USA Jul 2, 2008 This was some of the weirdest liquid I’ve ever bothered to try. It had me cringing by the end, and it wasn’t from the heat - it really wasn’t too hot. I imagine this is roughly what an eisbock version of Budweiser Chelada would taste like if uncarbonated and mixed with a sweet white wine. Yes, it’s that bizarre - novel, but somewhat repulsive. Notes of honey, habañero pepper and a sweet white wine (reisling) are most prominent, and while this packs noticeable heat, it isn’t anything that’ll make you break a sweat. It will leave you wanting something else, though.
