Bottled. Pasteurised.
A smooth, full-bodied stout with a refreshing hoppy aftertaste. Brewed with proportions of Black Malt for colour and ’toast’ flavour and Brown Malt for dryness. Based on a recipe over 100 years old, brewing was revived in 1996 after a break of 79 years.

Dark copper coloured beer with a small head. The aroma is pure roasted coffee. The taste is very bitter with burnt coffee. The finish is somewhat dry. Still it is a good beer.

Pours dark brown with a thin disappearing tan head. Nice sweet malt and chocolate aroma with creamy hints. Roasted flavor with coffee and chocolate notes. Quite full and a nice taste. Not the fullest stout, but still very nice.

Bottled, pasteurised. Dark red to black beer with slight head. Toasted flavours throughout, some chicory, coffee and chocolate malt. Tongue drying though balanced with a fruity grape note. Very slightly sour at the end.

Bottle. The colour is black with a tint of wine red. The thin lid of foam is beige.

The smell is fresh with hints of coffee, dark chocolate, and some sweet burned malt.

The carbonation is string and a bit tickly.

The taste is burned, bitter and a bit sour. I found notes of black coffee and some cream; the body was surprisingly weak for a stout. The aftertaste is rather short with dry burned notes.

Very dark brown with red flashes. Aroma is coffee and sweet roasted malts. Same for the taste plus some chocolate and a sweet roasted finish. Medium bodied, drinkable and nice.

UPDATED: NOV 5, 2006 Jan, 2005 Bottled. Well. Having this just after Sam Smith’s Oatmeal Stout is quite a revelation. I mean this is not one of the best stouts I’ve ever had, but boy it tastes world class compared to that Sam Smith’s nonsense. Good fresh fruit and coffee and chocolate. Even though filtered, this has no boiled off flavours, and everything tastes pleasantly fresh and in order. Mmmmm. I’m enjoying this. [3.3]
Nov, 2006 Bottled. Very drinkable and pleasant. Less dry and bitter than the Guinness style, less coffee accented than some modern stouts, less sweet than stronger examples. It defines itself by why it is not, largely because it doesn’t set out to define its own place in the stout world. A quiet stout - by that I don’t mean bland or flavourless, but lacking in distinctive character. Drinkable and tasty - and that by itself is good enough for me on most days. Nice one. [3.0]
