5 AROMA 10/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 10/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 20/20 Wulfstan (509) - California, USA - SEP 23, 2008
For me, beer can hardly get better than this.
This is a beautiful reddish copper with a huge, light tan head that slowly shrinks to a thin permanent top and nice lacing. The smell, very English, is wonderful It has toasted bread, leaves and tea, spices, caramel, grain, hay, stewed apples, fresh fruit, dried fruit, and nuts.
The flavour is complex and exciting but restrained. It hasa lot of leaves and tea, nuts, caramelized dried fruit, juice, toasted bread and grain, hints of citrus and nuts, black pepper, and red wine. The finish is hoppy, crisp and clean, yet long and complex.
4.5 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20 AlchemistZ (493) - Richmond, Virginia, USA - SEP 4, 2004
Bottled version. There it is, that luscious, juicy malt I want in a true English ale. Soft, toasted, caramel aroma with an underlying butter note. Salt is also noticable in the aroma. Bitterness is prevalent throughout the profile. Toasty, light caramel makes up the bulk of the malt character. The beer is not overwhelming but it has a slight chewy character to it. The earthy, spicy, woody Goldings come out in the finish and combine with a touch of malt sweetness on the middle of the tongue for a phenomenal exit.

Lovely ale. Not too much nose on it but the flavours are hoppy caramel biscuity. Really smooth. Gorgeous stuff. Nice lingering finish. Plenty of carbonation for such a smooth ale. Recommended!!

Another fine ale from the UK. Nice grassy, herbal, flowery hops blend with biscuity malt and toffee. Very fruity yeast, nice dry well-hopped finish. Nice amber color, little head to speak of. Brings back the sights and sounds of England. A fine session ale.
