COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Cask: Regular. Also available bottle conditioned.
Terrific straw-coloured beer with a fresh, hoppy aroma and a well rounded, malty flavour with an intense bitterness which leads to an excellent long, dry finish. Winner of numerous, prestigious awards, most notably Best Strong Bitter at The Great British Beer Festival in 1992/93.
Ingredients: Optic pale malt. East Kent Goldings and Challenger hops (The bottled version uses EKG only).

Cask at the Happy Man, Englefield Green - 08/09/12. Clear pale blonde with a thinnish white head. Nose comprises pale malt, citrus and faint orange. Taste follows nose, a little summer fruit. Medium bodied and carbonation. I used to drink this beer regularly in the late 90’s and held it with high esteem. Doesn’t seem to be the same, or could be my taste buds crave a stronger beast!?! Pesky yanks and scandos!

Flowery hop aroma Cloudy golden color, white head and tiny bubbles. Light malty start, biting carbonation (like champagne), and a decent hop finish. Very clean, very fresh.

Bottle. Poured clear straw with an average frothy white head that was mostly lasting with good lacing. Medium sweet hoppy aroma. Medium body. Medium sweet flavor with a small bitter finish of moderate duration. My expectations were met.

UPDATED: AUG 23, 2007 Cask. Cloudy yellow with a mid-sized lasting white head. Citrus hops and malt aroma. Clean malty flavour with some bitterness. It does a good job as a quenching lager-like ale.

UPDATED: JUN 27, 2006 Cask Conditioned. How disapointing that I am marking this, one of the better pale ales, after having it at a local Wetherspoons. O.k the pub has a cask marque but that means nothing now, the Landlord that earned the award for this Macpub has long gone (the power of money I suppose!!) Anyway, it was flat and lifeless as MacP beers tend to be. How is it that a chain like this can promise great beers then serve them so badly? If I were Hop Back I would stop Wetherspoons having any of their beer (is that a pig flying past the window?) que sera.
Re Rate - Horse & Jockey, Bodicote. This is as it should be, Light body but excellent bitterness and biscuity maltiness. Good quaffing beer but with strength.

500 ml bottle poured a clear gold with a small lasting creamy white head. Aromas of straw, graininess, light spice and light citrus. Palate was light to medium bodied and smooth with a dry finish. Flavors of straw, light spice and a hint of citrus with a dry lingering bitter finish.

UPDATED: JUN 27, 2004 Hazy light gold with thick white head. Light malt aroma with some lemon. Probably drank this warmer than Tupalev, as the hops where very sharp and coming well thourgh the malt. The malt come sout much later, when the swetness is noticed. Light to medium. Nice.
