Cartoonkhaki (1220) - Brantford, Ontario, - JAN 27, 2014
Flat black with little red highlights and a muted tan head. Aroma is burnt & bready. Flavour is roasted, mild hop and sweet bread. Decent body though that I thought carried the flavours well.

473ml can. Pours a dark, dark brown with a walnut coloured head. Mineral notes, light molasses, light coffee, and an off-putting sort of rice smell. Weird. Light bodied, but with good carbonation, dry ashy coffee notes at the forefront, light molasses, light graphite, and again the rice (or maybe rice cracker) note that just doesnít fit, and that more or less follows through to the finish where a little bit of sweetness peaks through. Itís not bad, but itís also not a repeat purchase.

Aroma is roasted and smoky, black but not opaque, tan head. malty flavour, smooth palate, light carbonation, sweet, somewhat metallic, fairly strong flavour, somewhat roasty. Not bad, but one dimensional.

473ml can from the LCBO. Deep brown/black body with a minimal tan head. Notes of cocoa, coffee, fig and some roasty flavors. This beer has average alcohol, low percieved bitterness and a finish which is mostly cocoa. Extremely light bodied and sessionable. One of my favorites.

Pours deep ruby brown with one fat finger of light beige head diminishing gradually to a thin skim, moderate lacing (4/5). Nose is muted coffee, roast malts, nuts, ashes (6/10). Taste is low sweetness and moderate bitter, smoke, burnt (5/10). Light body, moderate to low carbonation, bitter smoky finish (3/5). Considering the only other schwarzbier I can recall having tried is the Krombacher Dark, Iím not entirely sure I know what this style is aiming for. If they were going for ďwatery stout in which somebody snuffed a cigaretteĒ, well, bullseye, I guess. Dunno - if anything, Iím less thrilled with this than the Krombacher. Not all that interesting a style, though perhaps marginally preferable to a macro lager. Definitely not my favourite beer from this brewery. (10/20)

Solid black with a little bit of tan head. Aroma is super roasty and toasty. Very biscuity with a little coffee. Nice. Very serious malty taste, more roast and bitterness. Feel is thin, but hey, this isnít an RIS, itís a lager. Good beer!

Very dark pour. Lighter than expected head that is pretty thick. Nice nutty smell. Goes down nice at first but then thereís something there. Something smoked, over smoked. A touch burnt tasting. Not sure what that taste is but I donít like it. No sir.

2014-08-01. Very dark brown body with a small tan head. 3+ Aroma is mild, light green herbaceous hops character, muted dark malt. Flavour has sweetish core with light roasty malt and dry finish. Average bodied palate, soft carbonation. Can from the LCBO, Toronto

czar (4609) - Quťbec, Quebec, CANADA - JUL 11, 2014
can. pours clear dark brown mahogany with a nice creamy light beige head offering good retention and lacing. roasted coffee beans, burnt nuts and chocolate, clean yeast esters, very lightly tart red fruitiness, or maybe more of a roasted acidity, bittering resin and coffee - appreciable robustness, dry maple syrup notes, hint of hickory, ashes and metal. moderate carbonation, light body - oily, relatively dry grassy-spicy-resinous-bitter coffee finish. lacking in lagering notes - tad to much roasted acidity. decently crafted robust schwarz tho.

473ml can. Looks dark. Aroma of light roasted malts, some pale malts, dough, and hints of hops. Flavor the same with an average texture. Nothing really stands out about this beer, but itís not bad for the style.

This lager poured a deep amber colour with a quick living head. Scents of smoke, malt and caramel. First swig was nice but a little thin in the mouthfeel dept. Malty, smokey flavours most prodominant. Finish is smokey but very good. Thicker would be better... That sounds terrible!
