This lager poured a deep amber colour with a quick living head. Scents of smoke, malt and caramel. First swig was nice but a little thin in the mouthfeel dept. Malty, smokey flavours most prodominant. Finish is smokey but very good. Thicker would be better... That sounds terrible!

[6566-20140801] Can. Granola toasted peat cocoa aroma. Clear, cola mahogany body with a medium-lasting creamy off-white head. Roasted chicken skin and grainy cereal flavour. Full body. Good, drinkable. (7/3/7/4/14) 3.5

Great packaging, a cool name and an interesting style choice from a bigger brewery. Let’s face it, all those things factor in to buying and perhaps ultimately, enjoying a beer. The looks get you ready for a treat right away; sitting in my dimpled mug be a black-brown beauty with a rich and creamy light beige ’do. Ushered up by the appearance come strong scents of roasted nuts, coffee, toasted brown bread and hints of chocolate and burnt toffee sweetness. There is also another taste in the background of smoke and kibbles. The taste matches pretty perfectly, bittersweet leaning more towards bitter with a strong smokey coffee aftertaste that sticks around for a long time. I wish the body was a bit fuller but I suppose it is a lager after all. I would definitely by more of these. A solid beer overall.

Pours a dark ruby black with a large foamy tan head. Some light aromas of chocolate, molasses, and espresso. Has a medium body with a soft carbonation, has a rather "foamy" mouthfeel acutally. There is a slight sweet flavor that turns into a bit of an unsettlingly tangy bitterness. I don’t know about you, but I don’t like my beers to have tang. The can is pretty eye catching, although I think it caught my eye for the first and last time.

473ml can. Pours a dark, dark brown with a walnut coloured head. Mineral notes, light molasses, light coffee, and an off-putting sort of rice smell. Weird. Light bodied, but with good carbonation, dry ashy coffee notes at the forefront, light molasses, light graphite, and again the rice (or maybe rice cracker) note that just doesn’t fit, and that more or less follows through to the finish where a little bit of sweetness peaks through. It’s not bad, but it’s also not a repeat purchase.

Aroma is roasted and smoky, black but not opaque, tan head. malty flavour, smooth palate, light carbonation, sweet, somewhat metallic, fairly strong flavour, somewhat roasty. Not bad, but one dimensional.

473ml can from the LCBO. Deep brown/black body with a minimal tan head. Notes of cocoa, coffee, fig and some roasty flavors. This beer has average alcohol, low percieved bitterness and a finish which is mostly cocoa. Extremely light bodied and sessionable. One of my favorites.

Pours deep ruby brown with one fat finger of light beige head diminishing gradually to a thin skim, moderate lacing (4/5). Nose is muted coffee, roast malts, nuts, ashes (6/10). Taste is low sweetness and moderate bitter, smoke, burnt (5/10). Light body, moderate to low carbonation, bitter smoky finish (3/5). Considering the only other schwarzbier I can recall having tried is the Krombacher Dark, I’m not entirely sure I know what this style is aiming for. If they were going for “watery stout in which somebody snuffed a cigarette”, well, bullseye, I guess. Dunno - if anything, I’m less thrilled with this than the Krombacher. Not all that interesting a style, though perhaps marginally preferable to a macro lager. Definitely not my favourite beer from this brewery. (10/20)

Solid black with a little bit of tan head. Aroma is super roasty and toasty. Very biscuity with a little coffee. Nice. Very serious malty taste, more roast and bitterness. Feel is thin, but hey, this isn’t an RIS, it’s a lager. Good beer!
