On tap at Alehouse Project, pours a hazy orange with a small white head. Aroma brings out lots of piney hops upfront, with some stone fruits and dry biscuity malt. Flavour is very fresh, with loads of piney hops upfront, a touch of fruitiness and bone dry biscuity malt. Loads of pine on the finish. Excellent.

UPDATED: MAR 18, 2016 500ml Bottle. As soon as I started pouring the beer the aroma was in my face. This is exactly what I expect from a double IPA. Pours a deep gold with little head. It has a strong malty flavour nestled with undertone hops characteristics. Excellent beer.

Bottle. Orange color, hazy liquid, no head. Floral, honey, clove and spice aroma. Very complex beer. And very good.

Very well balanced DIPA. Hops are not as agressive as other nz ipas but still so much flavour. Tasty!

Delicious aroma of resin and pine with an underlying sweetness kind of a cross between warm peach skin and freshly sawn timber. Taste is the same with good bitterness and more peach at the back. The ride from front, through the middle to the back is all about the resin. I wouldn’t say the alcohol is hidden as much as it is well integrated throughout the length of the beer, giving it a nice twang. Very nice for the hopheads.

500ml bottle. Was recomended to me to try, not as big and in your face as some other DIPA’s but really layered and rich and balanced. ABV is well hidden for an 8.5% and its actually quite drinkable. One I will def try again.

Imagine my surprise and delight when I stumbled across this beer, the only one from the range I hadn’t sampled and which I was told by the Hop Federation Brewery that they didn’t have any more of. To boot, it was the last one on the shelf and I swiped it in front of someone else who I am certain was making a bee-line for it. Not today Sonny Jim. This one is mine... all mine. It is a beer that promises much if the others in the range are anything to go by. I recently raved about the Rakau IPA and am base over apex for the Red IPA. Anticipation was running high until I saw that my wife had put it in the fridge for me and I was going to have to wait for it to come to just under room temperature... making anticipation run even higher. It appears slightly hazy and resinous amber with just a patchwork of creamy white head left after there was a good finger of it following pouring. The aroma was of satisfying resinous American hoppiness: amber malts, spruce cones and stewed orchard fruit. It sat firmly within style guidelines and reflected this in the flavour. The body was slightly sweet, excellent, weighty bitterness and somewhat viscous. Those stewed apricot, peach and nectarine flavours return with the afore-mentioned resinous quality. This guarantees a long finish. A real treat this beer and not a sip was wasted.

A delicious double that makes a nice step up from their equally excellent Red IPA. Yet another antipodean brewer that is spoiling the local market with excellent choices.
