@ Havregatan. Flaska från Mikkeller Bottle Shop, Köpenhamn (47 DKK). Ser väldigt inbjudande ut med sin svarta färg och den bruna skumkronan. Mycket rostade toner, lakrits, choklad, kaffe, sojatoner, sötma, fyllig, oljig i konsistensen. Avslutningen är torr med rostade toner.

Pours a viscous dark brown liquid that looks pitch black in the glass. The quite large, medium brown head is creamy and dense, long-lived and laces the glass excellently. The aroma is pretty special, actually quite strange. It’s dominated by overripe or almost rotten fruity notes, especially citrus. The roasted background include coffee and chocolate. The rotten citrus is there in the flavours as well, in addition to ash and badly integrated alcohol. Further back I get chocolate, and vague hints of tropical fruits. The beer is full-bodied with an oily texture and moderate carbonation, and with a rough feel. I find both the aroma and flavour somewhat confusing: this is not a fruity porter nor a BIPA, but something in between. The hops don’t feel like a fully integrated part of the beer, it’s sort of laying a disturbing carped of rotten fruits over the roasted porter notes. Having said that, this is not a bad beer by any means. Just not that amazing.

Tap at Mikkeller & Friends. Pours very dark brown with a small foamy khaki head. Nose is full of big roast and cocoa nibs, plenty of pine driven hops and some fresh coffee beans. Taste is big and bitter. Plenty of piney hops kick out from beneath the heavy roast and charry malts. Think woody, earthy, dark chocolate. Bitter and burnt and loaded with hops. Pleasant stuff

Bottle. Pours an oily black body with a massive creamy caramel-hued head. Nose is dark chocolate, licorice, leather, sweet grains, creamy caramel and hints of straw, smoke, cocoa nibs and coffee. Very promising. Taste is burnt toast, astringent smoke-tainted cocoa notes, bitter herbs and dark berries, coffee and hints of licorice and ashes in the back. Dry, astringent-bitter finish with a lingering bitter/burnt aftertaste. Medium to full body, medium carbonation. Far too much emphasis on the roasted grains, which collide with the hops in my mouth, creating a far too high level of bitterness in all shapes and forms (roasted + bitter hops). Tune it down a bit and try again maybe?

330 ml bottle, Cardinal Pub & Bar, Stavanger. ABV is 10.5%. Pitch black colour, large and lasting brown head. Aroma primarily of roasted malts and fruity and piney hops, notes also of coffee, dark chocolate and woodwork. Smooth mouthfeel, some warmth from the alcohol. Very roasty and well hopped flavour, medium sweet, with the same elements as in the aroma, some liquorice too. Remarkably good beer.
