Dark black color, with a beige creamy head, nice earthy grainy toasted, roasted, black, chocolate malty nose, with a green vegetal roasted coffee bean, burnt toast, burnt cocoa note, and a earthy green floral leafy, grassy hoppy accent in the aroma follows through on a medium-bodied palate with a nice earthy greeny flowery leafy, tobacco, grassy hoppy, grainy roasted, chocolate, black malty character, with a light roasted grind coffee bean, dark bitter chocolate, burnt toast, burnt bread crumbs, burnt nuts flavour, leading towards a yeasty, grainy earthy toasted, black, chocolate maltiness, lingering leafy, grassy hop bitterness finish

Another great effort from an always interesting brewery. Pours pitch black with lots of lacing. Big espresso notes and some bitter chocolate lurking in there as well. Medium/heavy sweet tastes and heavy bitterness. Creamy with lots of carbonation. Really nice.

Nice little package. Pours black with great lacing and good head. Soft carbonation with nice nusky roast nalt aroma on head. More black than Ipa. Smooth finish with a bitter nut kick. Not hugely hop heavy and not sure exactly how to classify this but its good drinking. Tap at new brewpub on opening night.

2013-05-30. Black body with a modest tan head head. 4+ Aroma of leafy green hops, dusty malt, light tangy quality. Flavour is dryish light roast up front, moderate bitterness. Some fruity undertones try and claw their way out in the finish, lingering tangy quality. Dusty malt accents. 7+ Average bodied palate, modest carbonation. Okay.

(Rating #4646

In short: A tasty and unusual hoppy black beer.
How: Tap at brewery tasting room, Hopfenstark 6th anniversary party.
The look: Black body topped by a medium beige head.
In long: Nose is moderately hoppy (green hops pellets), a dry semi-rustic sensation (dusty attic) and notes of cocoa. Taste is very roasted with plenty of burnt grainy chocolaty malts (flavor of burnt chocolate chip cookies) with light notes of rustic yeast, and assertive hopping with a green herbal and slightly resinous character. Bitterness of medium intensity leading the way to a rather dry finish. Full body with a lively carbonation, a nice mouthfeel. This was a tasty beer for sure, but it also felt a bit chaotic with the rustic yeast, roast, strong bitterness, dryness, etc... Overall this was a fun experiment that I enjoyed, but it is not something I can objectively recommend. My first beer at the Hopfenstark anniversary party after standing in line in the cold for one hour to enter the brewery, and standing in line in the cold to enter in a local beer event is a great way to spot people who will never be the prime minister of my country.

tap at torst. pleasant pine and tropical fruit hops backed by a pleasant roast, dark chocolate, cream. i think black ipa before i think saison yeast, but the yeast does seem to add a nice earthyiness. well executed. dry. nice.
