First of a special series, this is another uncommon beer from Hopfenstark. True Belgian esters from Abbey yeast, a lot of malt and body without any alcohol taste and some grape flavor from New World hops.

Fruity nose and some unidentifiable notes. Soft, diacetyl body with mango, canteloupe and light pear juice. Strange beer, I’m not sure what to make of it.

A hazed reddish brown ale with a thin creamy mocha head. In aroma, smooth mix of candy sugar and floral hops, orange pulp, quite nice. In mouth, a nice treacle malt with nice herbal hops, menthol, nutty notes, very nice. On tap at Mondiale 2012 , June 9 2012.

@Mondial de la Bière 2012, Montreal - cloudy dark amber beer; little foam left, earthy, caramel; lively and tasty palate; some late bitterness; aftertaste of nougat and honey, earthy and fairly hoppy; candi sugar and notes of alcohol - a different beer, hard to spot

Pours hazy deep golden with a off-white head. Aroma has notes of malt, caramel, yeast, dried fruits, floral, hay and grass. Taste is medium sweet and light bitter with a long fruity, yeasty and grassy finish. Body is medium, texture is oily, carbonation is soft.

2012-06-08. Hazy dark amber-brown body with a small beige head. 3+ Flavour is nice, with a malty core and modest spice, sort of peppery, light alcohol notes, and light biscuity touches to the malt. 7+ Aroma of alcohol, mild spice character similar to that in the aroma. 7+ Medium body that suits it and has a perfect moderate carbonation level. 3+ Pretty solid, my deScription here doesn’t really do it justice. On tap at Mondial, Montreal

Draft at RR Street. Pours hazy brown with minimal off-khaki head. Nose is candi sugary malt, figgy and merloty fruit, dry florals. Tastes fruity, with notes of merlot, earthy funky yeasty esters, some florals and hops and heat in the finish. Solid complexity. A nice find.

UPDATED: JAN 27, 2013 My Bottom Line:
Tropical fruit hoppiness and fruity esters become one before peppery hop resins seal this New World Strong Ale.

Further Personal Perceptions:
-A veil of foam tops the misty amber.
-Alcohol is perceptible in the finish, yet the dryness and smoothness of the body make this treacherously easy to drink.
-This may not be super complex, but it is impeccably rendered and entirely harmonious.
-The soft carbonation doesn’t evoke Belgian character, but the yeast does.
-I would have liked a bit more malt character.

On tap at Hopfenstark during their anniversary party. Pours a clear amber with a medium sized white to beige head. Light musk, toast, warm malt and candy. Medium bodied, warm and toasty, slightly sweet. A touch of warm cereal, candy sugar, sweet and warming. Finishes with a good bit of toasty malt, a bit of warming alcohol, toast and sweetness. Nice.

Unique in it’s fruitiness as far as belgian strongs are concerned. Don’t know that i would have been able to specify "grape" without it being in the deScription, but that’s it. Slight grape flavor on top of subtle hopping, and a sweet and spicy belgian yeast. not a standout, but a pretty nice brew."

[4484-20120608] Cask. Mild fruity mango hops aroma. Slightly hazy, bee brown body with a quick foamy off-white head. Sweet fruity mango hops flavour has a nice bitter follow-through. Medium body. Interesting strong fruit characteristics. (7/4/7/3/15) 3.6
